Celebration of Vaerskaldr
In the morning, bells and fireworks wake the town. The main roads have stalls where people serve many seafood based breakfast foods. Be on the lookout though, because many tricksters will carry buckets of a green slimy substance that represents the slime that Vaerskaldr was covered in. People also wear squid beaks necklaces and have squid tentacle kebabs. Children can play in the streets, pretending to be the towns heroes and mind controlled sailors. By lunch, the statues of Vaerskaldr and his allies are moved to the shoreline, a great thatch aboleth is constructed in the sea, and a moment of silence is held before a playing of the city's anthem. Afterwards, everyone ends up drinking heavily and there are oysters for snacking. Along with the days events, different people are selected to play roles in the great reenactment by the Upright. At dinnertime, there is a great show which ends in the aboleth burning down to an uproar of applause.
History
The first celebration was held the night when Vaerskaldr returned from the sea, drenched to his cap with a green ooze. The next few years of the festival, a giant squid was drawn in for sailors to fight, but the logistics of that ended up being far too complicated. A giant thatch aboleth has been constructed every year since on a giant everstone platform to be ceremonially burned during a mock battle.
Execution
The fireworks in the morning represent the first attack on the city from the aboleth. The feast of fish increases the towns sales and the use of squid represents the aboleth since it's a lot more common. The green slimy substance represents the slime that Vaerskaldr was covered in when he came out of the sea. The game of sailors vs heroes stems from the mind controlled sailors that came with the aboleth to attack the city. The showing of the statues and the giant thatch aboleth are both used in the great historical retelling of the battle between good and evil, and to promote loyalty to the city's leadership.
