Department of Favored Sciences

Most of Maraphel eschews science in preference of magic. It's a point of aesthetic, much like Paratorion's obsession with robots and how Prazigal uses actual volcanoes as long range weapons. It is a choice, and it is one that some people disdain, but it is their own.
Even so, there are elements in the world that must be used and harnessed or else risk that the enemy will use it against you, and so Maraphel's kings and queens do keep a laboratory in the capital city to deal with the mad variations of sciences. They are carefully approved, rarely used, and not terribly well funded, but it still exists.
The building itself is a veritable block of stone, concealing the electric lights within.
