This is my attempt at a sci-f setting for a 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons campaign. It centers around a single human-inhabitable "Goldilocks" planet (and its solar system) and the attempts of humans from the planet Earth to colonize it. I've used real events in real human history up to the year 2018 as well as several thousand years of vague, probably-inaccurate predictions of the future as background for the setting.   The general idea is that because the planet is so far away, it takes a ridiculously long time to get there and requires having multiple generations live and die on the ship or the use of some sort of stasis/cryogenics technology while the ship travels as fast as possible (but still sub-lightspeed).   Because of the rate at which human space travel advances, all of the attempts to reach the planet made hundreds or thousands of years apart end up actually getting there within a few decades of each other. This results in a clash between several vastly different cultures as they try to colonize the planet.   Regarding alien life, I've decided that none of it should be "equivalent" to humanity. There are primitive forms of plant- fungus- and animal-like life on Outworld, there are vast cosmic terrors residing in deep space, and there are unimaginably advanced alien beings who have transcended physical form, but no "space elves" or whatever. If there was any human-like life (in terms of sapience and technological levels) it has long since died out or moved forward.   I'm still debating whether there should be advanced AI, and if there is, whether I should make robots a playable race.
