Fallen Quarters
Throughout The Depths, warded sleeping quarters offer temporal safety to explorers and miners. The ancient runes protecting these places seem to ward off both the dread negatively impacting recovery, as well as dangerous creatures.
How important these safe zones are, was revealed when powerful undead were encountered deep below. Locked in place by runes, initially it was unclear where these undead came from. Careful explorers managed to discover the sleeping quarters in this area, where broken runes were discovered. Traces of combat, as well as personal belongings, were discovered in these quarters.
The current theory is that the inhabitants were miners that were surprised in their sleep. The damage to the runes allowed dangerous creatures to enter the sleeping quarters, which resulted in many deaths. Both the fallen creatures and the fallen miners then must have then become undead.
Unfortunately these fallen quarters and their surrounding area are part of the direct path to the deeper areas of the Depths. Until a way is discovered to clear them, there are limits to how far miners can be escorted to gather precious resources.
