Cedric the Hunter

Cedric (a.k.a. Cedric the Hunter)

Physical Description

Apparel & Accessories

When Cedric went missing, he was wearing cold-weather garments produced by locals, who traveled north during the warm seasons to hunt fat animals, then returned south in the Cold Harvest season. The garments consisted of inner and outer layers, made from animal hide and furs. The outer layers were treated with water-repelling substances.   Asides from rations and hunting knives, Cedric had two important weapons. He had a short boar spear to defend himself from animal charges, and a repeating crossbow that was wound up by cranking its gears. The bow was treated with various substances that let it function well even when exposed to snow, and could hold six bolts at a time. Cedric carried two spare magazines, and two additional quivers of twenty spare bolts each.   Cedric always carried some important tools, such as his tinderbox, fire starters, and a two-bottle setup used to boil and purify water. He also had two spyglasses, one with triple magnification and one with tenfold magnification. Additionally, he carried some medicinal herbs, bandages, and needle plus iron wire to help stitch up and treat any injuries.

Personal history

Cedric was born in a village in yellow shale plains in the north of Grayburn, a few day trips away from what later on would become Goldrock. His parents were primarily hunters, who helped supply the entire village with meat. He learned the trade from them, but soon began to hunt for the thrill and not just out of necessity. Over the years, he became intrigued with difficult hunts and ended up leaving his village to wander far and wide while hunting difficult prey.   As time went on, Cedric discovered that the rising upper class, who made a good profit off steam engine-related endeavours, eagerly spent good money on rare objects. This included the furs and skulls of rare wild animals, which meant Cedric could earn far more hunting those than with the normal hunts his parents did. He began focusing on animals not just rare but also beautiful, aiming to bag prey that both gave him a thrill and filled his purse.   One of Cedric's main targets was the elusive snow wolf, a massive wolf species living at the far north of Grayburn. In these cold areas, only few lived, and only part of the year. The snow wolf lived near the infamous fog wall, which local stories said swallowed people whole. Cedric didn't believe these stories, but stayed away from the fog nonetheless.   Then came the crucial day when Cedric was exploring a valley he hadn't been in before, tracking a snow wolf. He ran into a massive fog bank, noticing the tracks disappeared into the fog. He withdrew and observed the valley from a distance, and a few hours later he saw a snow wolf appear from the fog, quickly hunt a deer, then drag its prey back into the fog. Cedric sneered at the sight, believing the fog stories to be mere fiction now. That night he stayed at a small settlement nearby, bragging about 'having seen the truth'.   Little did Cedric realise, the fog he had encountered was normal fog, and the fog wall was located a few hundred paces further. When he went into the fog the next day, searching for the wolf's lair, he failed to realise he was now wandering into the real fog wall. When he didn't return, a group of villagers explored. They found the wolf's lair, and noticed Cedric's tracks had barely missed it and wandered further into the fog wall. Realising what had happened, they told Cedric's story as a cautionary tale.   Cedric's name is now known due to this story, combined with the upper class families that have furs and skulls that he had sold them. Having a Cedric-animal is a status symbol used to show off their ancestors 'wealth and smart thinking'. The middle class consider this a silly thing, as a recently hunted animal will produce as good a fur as Cedric did in the past. But the upper class doesn't care.
