Arising from the great stabilization missions of the mid 22nd century, the United Nations would become the world government that many had hoped (and feared) it would be. Quickly it would expand to encompass all of Sol System as well as the nearest colonies, and following the development of the Alcubierre-Seldon Warp Drive would come to extend itself out further and further, bringing home many of its scattered sons and daughter.
Demography and Population
The UNFC has a population of nearly 30 billion people representing cultures from all across Terra and the various evolutions off-world. Roughly a third of the population resides in the Sol System concentrated on Earth and Mars with significant number inhabiting the Lunar Economic Zone and in the various settlements and habitats on the Rim.
External of Sol, the rest of the population is fairly evenly distributed among the 40 odd inhabited star systems, though the various states themselves often have a greatly unbalanced spread. The single largest state is that of the Greater German Republic on New Berlin with just over 1 Billion colonists scattered across the system.
This large population is continually growing, with death rates approaching record lows as new medical advances allow for even longer life expectancy beyond the well-established 150 years.
The UNFC through its member states posses 34 star-systems (including Sol), consisting of nearly 346 states spread across 47 planets, 32 moons, and hundreds of stations. While most of these systems contains between 3 and 7 states, Sol itself retain the record for the highest amount of state fragmentation at 213. In addition there are a further 7 colonized star-systems under direct development of the UNFC, 3 which are being directly rebuilt after state failures during earlier era's of colonization and the remained newly colonized planets founded at the direct behest of the UNFC as part of a strategy of stellar envelopment.
The United Nations Ministry of Defense consists of three major operational branches as well as a handful of supporting bureaus.
United Nations Army (UNA) is the primary ground arm tasked with securing and seizing planetary assets. Force composition is centered around highly mobile air-mechanized units reinforced by heavier armored ground forces, plus additional supports. Within the UNA are the administrative subdivisions centered on unit type and composition; Infantry, Armor, Artillery, Air Corps, Space Warfare, and Logistics. Units of various sizes are organized into combined arms forces under the various Ground Commands, which work closely with Naval forces assigned to the same region.
United Nations Navy (UNN) is the primary space arm tasked with securing and seizing interplanetary space and planetary orbits. Fleets are organized around Capitol ships, supported in turn by a multitude of other craft. Fleet Commands are assigned sectors to protect and work in tight coordination with the Ground Commands also assigned to those regions.
United Nations Peacekeepers (UNP) is a small elite force trained to intervene in interstate conflict and stabilize unstable societies through the restoration of law and order. The first mission remains the same as in the 20th, 21st, and 22nd centuries, to place themselves as a blocking force between two confrontational armies, though this is a mission rarely excersized. More frequent is stabilization missions, combating non-state actors and working to restore order.. Peacekeeping missions are assigned to the various regional military commands as well as being dispatched on their own independant missions
Supporting the primary branches are a handful of dedicated Bureaus, each with a non-combat support role; Personnel, Logistics, Military Technology, Military Intelligence,
and Planetary Defense.
Technology as a rule is on par across all of humanities regions, though the UNFC is a leader in Artificial Intelligence, High-Energy Weapons, and Biotech.
There are a myriad of religions, both of Earth and extraterrestrial origin. For the most part they have little participatory power except through the delegates from member states. The UNFC itself adopts no state religion, instead focusing on itself as a secular authority. However, the handful of theologically inclined states, where religion and government power are intertwined are members of the General Assembly, giving their states and by extension religions a say in the political decisions of the UNFC.
Controlling just over half of known space means the the UN is confronted by very few external competitors. However, they are still present.
First and foremost is the Orion Confederation, a collection of 113 major and minor city-states scattered across 14 star systems. Built around a strong libertarian ethic, they often resent what they see as the overbearing and conformist UNFC and all its attempts to control human settlements.
Second is the Stellar League of Armed Neutrality, centered on the monarchic world-state of Avalon. These are a loose collection of states, ones which feel threatened by both the Orion Confederation and the UNFC, working to remain independant. Many of these worlds are monarchies or autocracies, states whose leaders feel fundamentally threatened by the political forces that the superpowers represent.
Relations with both powers are cold due to the conflicts of the Third Wave of Colonization where the UNFC attempted to overrun and incorporate these distant entities into itself. Since that time envoys have been exchanged and their has been some thawing between members of the League and the UNFC, though Avalon itself as well as the Orion Confederation remain opposed to further expansion of the UNFC, at least in their direction.
Agriculture & Industry
The UNFC is supported by a mix of agricultural and industrial member states, though with a primary emphasis on industry and the production of high-tech and industrial goods. The vast industrial machine is supported through a combination of stellar and planetary mining, depending on the material in question and its relative scarcity in a given star system.
Trade & Transport
Trade within and without the UNFC consists of the movement of everything from agricultural products and raw materials for industry to high-tech items such as warp drives, AI's, and biomedical technology. Transport is done on warp-capable cargo ships plying the key routes between linchpin systems. For the most part these trade ships carry vast quantities of light industrial products, specialized machinery, and rare materials. Non-warp freighters are also used within settled systems as well, frequently moving cargo to transshipment stations along the edges of the systems. Short-haul cargoes are generally bulk materials such as metallic ores, chemcial compounds, and agricultural products.
The income generated by trade through tariffs and taxes is one of the largest sources of income for the UNFC, matching and at time succeeding the GDP levy on member states.
Methods of education vary between member states, some consisting of formal schooling, others of apprenticeships. Despite the variation the average education level settles out to 4-year college or technical programs, with a significant percentage going on to pursue multiple degrees and specialties over the course of their lifetimes. Access is universal, one of the few mandates that the UNFC has over its constituent states, though generally scions of political, mercantile, and military dynasties enjoy tutors and private education in excess of the public standard.
The primary physical assets of the UNFC are its planetary administration complexes on each of its member state, as well as their sub offices. These complexes consist primarily of trade, diplomatic, judicial, and military officials present to ensure coherence between all levels of governance.
Of note as well are the various military bases, ground and space, located in key systems as part of the Military Commands.
The jewel however is the vast Gaia Station, the space complex that has grown up at both ends of the Greater Union Space Elevator on Malta, the primary conduit for people and material across the UNFC.
