The Spiral of Bones Item in Osterria | World Anvil

The Spiral of Bones

Most of what is known about the Spiral of Bones is from the Book Clerical Accounts of The War of The Dead; Volume 7 and a few other religious manuals such as Exorcism of the Unliving and Smiting Evil and You: A Guide for Paladins. Most of those account speak of an upright cone that unleashes unspeakable horrors on surrounding areas. All those devote or otherwise are advised against touched, encountering, peering upon or even speaking of such items.

This conical object stands upright with the top of the cone extended upwards revealing a purple vial or cylinder of some sort that emits a powerful magic that shook my bones to the very core. The evil that seeped out was like an electrical fog, lavender in color. Two of the Paladin's that escorted me into this cavern attempted to shut the top of the cone, only to have their souls ripped from their bodies....Containment of the cone was of the utmost importance and the sacrifices of the men it took to close it should not be in vain. -"Chapter 19" Clerical Accounts of The War of The Dead; Volume 7
I dare to speak of an object of so much evil. How they ended up on our soul remains a mystery to me, how anyone would support such death and destruction is beyond what I can comprehend and merely thinking of such a thing brings sickness to my stomach. -Exorcism of the Unliving
If the top is unscrewed, anyone and anything living with in a spherical 600 feet turns undead. They undead can then further spread the curse by biting and killing other living beings, turning them undead almost instantly. The user of the Spiral is also turned.   Once the infection takes hold of a populace, if not addressed quickly the undead will begin to further change.
Notes from Grand Cleric, Thalms Fullmore-

The relic creates a species of undead never seen before. Fast growing and changing and relentless in thier pursuit of the living. I have thus far encountered three types.

Type I

A fast moving undead that resembles it's previous living form. They horde together and attack as one, like a school of fish almost. They spread the curse from their bites. Unlike other undead, the bitten that don't die will turn with in a few hours and the dead will rise almost immediately.

Type II

Larger and more resistant that the Type I's, the Type II's are violent and more vocal, possessing calls that bringing hordes of Type I's and can be heard for almost a mile out. Type I's will horde around a Type II since they have the ability to sense the living further away. Perhaps the most striking feature and ability of the Type II is its gut sack that is has overflown with bile and discarded fluids that the body no longer needs. The Type II will fling it's sack open and spread the filth on the ground in a surprisingly large radius, this can kill with its acidic and necrotic nature, caution and avoidance are advised.

Type III

The note cuts off here, but only the words "run" can be seen

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The cone itself is made of some sort of metal, the top 4-6 inches of which are a threaded cap that keeps the innards closed and away. Surrounding the metal cone are bones arranged in a spiral like pattern and are from humanoids such as elves and humans. None of the bones seem to all be from the same creature. They are grafted into the metal and almost welded there as if by magic keeping the bones 100% intact. The internals are not understood, but what it contains is only known by those that have closed it. There is some sort of cylinder that glows with a deep purple color, it is unknown what it is made out of as anyone that has touched was stricken instantly dead. Opening the cone is what activates the magic, turning all within 500-600 feet in sphere undead instantly, so further study is completely out of the question
