Memescape
In a universe with malevolent AIs, cybernetic augmentation, temporal manipulation, multiple dimensions and parallel universes, and *magic*, remote access to computers is… dangerous. As such, there exists the **memescape**. The memescape is a disperse collection of nodes for the augmented reality that is computer interaction built around the maxim that controlling physical access is the simplest and strongest security measure for virtual communication.
One’s access to a given **node** is defined by the strength of the node combined with one’s physical proximity to the node. One usually has complete access only to their own node (most people carry small nodes either as worn devices or as cybernetic implants). One is often able to make changes to the nodes of those around them (within the limits of permissions given) and the nodes of the buildings and communities around them (with even greater limits on permissions given). Access across continents is limited to the very wealthy. Access across worlds or systems is so rare that few living beings will ever encounter it.
Communication with nodes that you don’t have proximity to is generally limited to asynchronous video communication. Messages are not carried by a pervasive ‘net’, but rather by piggybacking on the physical travel of other people’s nodes.
