Spireweed

Spireweed, or "Reaching Vines" as the locals call it, is a rigid, vine-like plant that is plentiful in the Badlands. It grows tall, stretching up toward the sky in a spiraling formation as though the plant were wrapped around a pillar of some kind. The weed did not exist before the Brightening, and has no nutritional value of any kind, It typically grows in very open locations, such as planes or the tops of the hills. Curiously, it requires no water to grow, though it still needs to be planted in the soil. Many of the Güllin people believe the plant holds magical secrets, and study it to see if they can somehow use it as a way to survive without water.   It bares a deep yellow color, and the tallest recorded Spireweed measured ten feet high in its natural, corkscrew shape. Like most plants, the part of the coil closest to the ground is the thickest part, and can be as wide as one's forearm before it becomes difficult to harvest. The problem lies in the rigidity of the plant; chopping trees down with an axe as one would a tree is required once the weed reaches significant height. It could be dug up, but many actually want the plant to regrow, as they have found other uses for it.   Due to its toughness, the weed is harvested for construction purposes. The material can hold its shape, and is yet flexible enough to allow it to be used in a variety of ways. It can easily be converted to thick rope, and with a bit more care made into thin yet strong twine. The husk can also be peeled, top to bottom, and when flattened and dried can form the tops of serviceable shelters. Those of the Badlands have made entire house roofs out of Spireweed husk.
