Scepter of Stars

The Scepter of Stars is a golden rod with a collection of sunstones mounted atop it. It is perhaps the most valued artifact among the Brights and the wizards of the Order of Luminance in particular. The Order decided to open the sky, but required a tool specifically for the task. Thus, the scepter was forged.   Sunstones in general collect sunlight, focusing the energy and storing it as enriched magical power. Since stars are simply other suns further away, sunstones can still keep a tiny amount of energy at night. It was the belief of the Order that opening the sky would eliminate any sort of filter between the sun and the planet, allowing even the far away suns to provide power.   The scepter was crafted with five sunstones mounted on it, arranged to focus the energy to a single point between them when used. This amplifies the already significant power of the sun, and the Order used that power to conduct the ritual opening the sky. Known as the Brightening, this event would not have been possible without the scepter.   The cataclysm that followed saw the destruction of much of the world’s surface, and the artifact disappeared during the chaos. Even so, the majority of the common Bright people don’t want the scepter found in case the Order decided to further its ambitions. Many Brightcasters are questing for it, whether for the Order or for personal gain, while others actively attempt to stop them.  There are even a few who are trying to find it because they believe it will help them undo the damage that was caused. Darklings who have sworn fealty to any Underedweller leader are honor bound to destroy it if found.   The Order has made many attempts over the centuries to re-create the scepter to no avail. The original wizards who were responsible for its construction were never heard from again after the Brightening. Presumed killed, these wizards alone had the knowledge of the process of forging such an item, and there is no written account of their process in building it.
