Healer's Hollow

Located within Rüdanith, the largest warren among the mountain regions of the world, Healer’s Hollow is an enormous network of caverns dedicated to caring for the sick. Established perhaps two generations after the Brightening, many healers are trained there. Those who have exhausted their own knowledge of remedies will take sick family members to this place, even if they have to travel for several weeks.   The caverns are only partly natural. Miners and darkweavers alike took several years to expand the caves and tunnels to accommodate a large number of people. At the main entrance, large pillars were kept in the rock in the main cavern, carved smooth at regular intervals to support the weight of the ceiling. Glimmer vines are artfully placed in spirals up the length of each pillar to provide sufficient lighting. Stalactites hang from above, with bioluminescent mushroom pods growing on them that give the impression of the night's sky.   The tunnel systems off the entrance cavern are far less elaborate, but still as uniform in size and shape as an underground tunnel can be. The patient alcoves run the length of the tunnel walls, with runes carved into the edges of each alcove. When activated, the runes manifest a fine curtain of shadow that acts as a magical screen, keeping sickness in but allowing healers to pass through it. They do not provide a perfect seal, but allow for at least partial protection for any passing individual.   Deep inside the cave system is a natural spring. There, healers grow a variety of plants in a vast garden, irrigated by the water of the spring. The herbs are used for any number of medicines, and other caves connected to it serve as laboratories to develop cures or conduct experiments, both magical and non-magical.   Despite the fact that Healer's Hollow was created by Darklings, those who work there have no tolerance for any discrimination. In their eyes, a sick Bright is the same as a sick Darkling, and all healers who wish to practice there must cast aside their prejudices and treat each person with equal respect.
