Battle of PF-312-x

Event | Alteri-Inimica War

The Battle of PF-312-x was a conflict that took place in the Alteri-Inimica War between the Alteri Dominion and the Inimica. It occurred in an Inimica controlled system, designated PF-312-x by the Alteri, which was being used by the Inimica as a staging system for their assaults. It ended in total disaster for the Alteri, and a decisive victory for the Inimica by using the new, devastating tactic of asteroid launching.

The Conflict

Prelude

In response to the disaster suffered during the Battle of Altera Domi, the Alteri Council shifted heavily in favour of it's military faction, which pushed for far more direct and offensive military action to be taken against the Inimica to repel them from the Milky Way Galaxy.   Owing to their new found power, the Alteri military formed plans to attack the PF-3120-x system, in which several planets were discovered to be acting as staging areas for Inimica advancement into the galaxy. An attack force was promptly assembled to assault the system and relinquish it from Inimica control.   In addition, research into what occurred regarding the infection of Alteri ships had turned up some results, and potential countermeasure were developed. These countermeasures were applied to each ship in the attack fleet, and so the Alteri technology was assumed to be immune going forwards.

The Engagement

The battle moved to begin as soon as the Alteri fleet, consisting of many Contender-class warships and Custodia-class battleships, jumped into the system. Initial reports confirmed that, exactly as suspected, a large Inimica fleet was stationed between several of the system's planets. The Alteri fleet then took up positions and advanced further into the system, lining up their approach in order to force the Inimica ships to approach on their forward arc on intercept. The Inimica fleet then moved to intercept as expected, assembling into a tight formation of their own, shielding their BDA-class battleships as the Alteri did with their Contenders.   The engagement began when the Inimica ships moved into range of the Alteri fleet. The Alteri immediately opened fire, aiming to concentrate fire and take out as many auxiliary ships as possible, freeing up the BDA battleships to be openly assaulted. The Inimica continued with their prior plan of ignoring the Contenders where possible due to their shield strength, however their strategy was notable better as they were targetting specific points on the Custodia-class ships shields, aiming to immediately hit hardpoints within the ship as soon as the shields failed. This knowledge was granted through the study of the Custodia-class specimens they had captured in the prior battle. The battle continued to rage on with losses being suffered by both sides. Fortunately for the Alteri, their countermeasures against Inimica infection appeared to be working, as no ship had yet fallen under their control, despite numerous detected hacking attempts.   The balance of power in the battle turned greatly when the captured Custodia-class ships entered into the system on the opposite side of the system's star, close to the asteroid belt. This approach was undetected by the Alteri, possibly as a result of modifications to the infected ship's systems, but most likely due to the stellar radiation blocking their scanners. The Custodia-classes, using their gravity sling, lassoed several large asteroids from within the system's asteroid belt and towed them towards the location of the battle, using the star and planets to cover their approach for as long as possible.   By the time the Alteri detected the approach of the infected Custodias, it was by far too late. The Custodias performed a swift manoeuvre and released their lassoed asteroids, launching them on a collision course with the Alteri's Contender-class vessels. The Contenders attempted to respond and reposition out of their path, but their extreme size and limited mobility made doing so impossible. Before they could do anything, the large asteroids impacted against two of the Contenders, placing immense strain upon their shields and depleting them in seconds, before proceeding to tear through the hull. One of the Contenders was immediately destroyed upon impact; the other suffered considerable damage that made it easy pickings for concentrated fire from the Inimica fleet.   The Alteri fleet was extremely thrown-off by the move, having never thought to use asteroid launching in this fashion before, and having several of their powerhouse Contenders cut down in mere moments severely impacted upon the morale and combat effectiveness of the fleet. As the move as a success, the Inimica moved their Custodias to lasso more asteroids and bring them back. The Alteri Custodias attempted to intercept and destroy them, however the rest of the Inimica fleet blockaded their movements and prevented them from doing so.   The fleets then continued to fight, locked down in their current positions. The Alteri fleet was immobilised, having no way to move and engage the Inimica Custodias at all, and no way to retreat without abandoning their Contenders. The Inimica fleet continued to encircle the Alteri fleet, bombarding around in an arc formation. Whilst the constant barrage of fire was under way, the Inimica Custodias circled around back to the asteroid belt, lassoing more asteroids with their slings and bringing them back to the site of the battle. With knowledge of the Inimica's tactics, the Alteri ships were able to concentrate fire upon the incoming asteroids to break up one entirely, and severely break up the other. None the less, what was left of the asteroid continued on it's course and impacted another of the Contender-class ships, near depleting its shields, and making it an easy target for concentrated fire.   Continued use of these tactics continually depleted the Alteri fleet's firepower, and without their Contenders, the entire fleet was quickly rendered combat ineffective. In their diminished state, the remainder of the Alteri forces made easy pickings for the remnants of the Inimica fleet, and were promptly defeated.

Outcome

In the short-term, the Alteri were utterly paralysed by their loss. They had failed in their primary objective of eliminating the Inimica launching site, and had lost all of their forces, something which was utterly unprecedented in even long-term Alteri military history. In addition, the Inimica's new tactics of utilising captured Custodia battleships to launch asteroids had proven particularly devastating, and not even their Contenders could be guaranteed to be particularly effective on the battlefield any longer. The Alteri Council once more lay in disarray, disparaged by the extreme defeat, though the military faction continued to reign supreme. Going forwards, the most apt strategy going forwards appeared to be to engage the Inimica in systems lacking an asteroid belt, or containing a few asteroids and sufficiently large objects as possible, to remove or reduce the risk of asteroid launch attacks. The only positive outcome that the Alteri could gleam from the battle is that their countermeasures against Inimica infection appeared to be effective, at least for the short-term.   The short-term consequences for the Inimica proved far more lucrative. Despite losing a few of their forces, they had succeeded in not only defending their controlled system, but also completely defeating an Alteri fleet for the first time in the conflict so far. Their new tactics had proven extremely potent, and by forming the tactic of using asteroid launching, they had developed a method of obliterating even the most powerful and well defended of Alteri vessels and structures going forwards.

Aftermath

In the long-term, the battle marked the beginning of the Inimica's use of asteroid launching against Alteri fleets, resulting in a complete change of tactics, and an end to the guaranteed battlefield dominance of Contender-class vessels. In addition, the battle forever changed the Alteri's view on warfare, having finally suffered their first full-scale defeat in an indeterminable amount of years. They would become much more weary from this point onwards, less confident in their technology, and much more aware of battlefield tactics as mere shield strength and firepower would no longer guarantee survivability nor victory. It can also be said to be the point at which the Alteri began looking into technology and techniques to avoid and mitigate the risk of asteroid launching, though it would not be until much later that they began developing and implementing technologies such as shock absorbers.
