Virtual Combat Arena Tradition / Ritual in Opposition: Mars | World Anvil

Virtual Combat Arena

Virtual Combat Arena (VCA) is one of many eSports thriving by the 24th century, and certainly the most popular. The advantage of VCA is that competitors and spectators do not have to be present in the same room. Though this means no ticket sales, pay-per-view and subscription services allow individuals from near and far to plug in to see their favorite competitors duke it out in simulated battle. VCA teams compete internationally. Quite a few teams are not even affiliated to a specific region!   VCA matches consist of 6 players on each team, each rigged up with motion capturing virtual reality force-feedback apparatuses. Players can specialize in offense, defense, melee, ranged, sniping, and close quarters combat, to name a few. During the regular season, VCA Pro-League teams compete in a round-robin style tournament, and the resulting scores determine the seeding of the top 16 teams that will face off in a single-elimination playoff bracket.   Netcode reliability and server-security are the biggest concerns for the league. Matches between teams from Earth and other locations require one to travel for the match, otherwise latency would be too severe. Recently the Virtual Combat Arena Pro-League has come under fire for an alleged hacking scandal by a few of the more popular teams. These teams had found a back-end exploit that allowed them to tweak their weapons' performance and view server-side information typically unavailable to individual competitors.
