New Kowloon Settlement in Opposition: Mars | World Anvil

New Kowloon

An orbital equivalent of a “boom town”, growing in direct correlation with the growth of orbital industry. As Most Mira Station was constructed, workers needed temporary housing. Modular habitats were linked together, with only the most basic amenities and safeguards. The habs were stark and unpleasantly utilitarian. As construction needs grew, more habitats were tacked on. More reactors and docking ports were installed to meet growing demands. Some habitats in prime locations were converted to claustrophobia inducingly cramped markets, pubs, and restaurants. The station even moves (veeery slowly in order to keep from breaking apart) into different orbital positions depending on the most demanding job at the time.   By 2300 New Kowloon is more than a mile in each direction, looking like a mishmash of utilitarian block apartments, scaffolding, and borg-cube like designs, and more seems to be added in each year. These days, living conditions are abysmal. Life support is failing or has failed in several blocks, and the entire place is held together with duct tape and happy thoughts. Crime and illness is high. Many residents aren’t even gainfully employed anymore, unable to afford a trip back to Earth or wherever else. The labyrinthine tunnels becomes their personal inescapable dungeon.   At its inception New Kowloon was designed to be neutral, and stateless, with all security performed by the owning company. That company has since fallen in and out of bankruptcy. The station has changed hands numerous times, including periods of libertalia-esque anarchy. At this point it is unclear just who does own New Kowloon, but it seems the utility outweighs the drawbacks as various benefactors pay to keep it up and running. Still, with virtually no law enforcement or government to speak of, it is an ideal spot for shady dealings and vices of all kinds. Just make sure to pack heat in case someone comes for you, and pack an oxygen mask in case a shootout tears open a bulkhead.

Demographics

The children born on New Kowloon and raised by its dangerous corridors are known as Bilge Rats, for their tendency to stow away in the bowels of a ship or space station. The few that survive into adulthood tend not to outgrow this disparaging title, and some wear it as a badge of honor signifying their hard upbringing.

Government

Periods of corporate control eventually descending into defacto anarchy and criminal rule.
