The Planet Restoring Machine Myth in OmniVerse | World Anvil

The Planet Restoring Machine

In some circles in cities scattered throughout the world, and spoken of in great detail by members of The Umbra, there have been stories told of a particular machine, of which is allegedly able to revitalize the entire world. Stories of it's existence had begun to pop up in the 1970s, with many differing accounts on to what extent it would restore the world. For a lot of people, it's just a story that people tell each other to convince themselves that they will soon be free from the frozen wasteland they have been forced to live in.

Summary

The most commonly accepted version of this myth revolves around a man going by the name of Rhys Freed. Rhys Freed was an employee of the Deepcore Foundation prior to the end of the world, working in one their massive R&D labs in Terlingua, Texas. When the bombs fell, Deepcore tried to keep it together despite the infrastructure all around them being destroyed beyond repair. They had begun work on a powerful machine for what was estimated to be for around a year, using mysterious components both technological and mystical. According to Rhys Freed after he was discovered by a exploration team on March 15th, 1968:
... It was beautiful, like stars being born and vaporized instantly inside the main chamber within it. All around it, snow began to melt and grass began to grow once again. We thought we could make it work, but the cost was too great. There was simply not enough resources for it to keep running.
The device was locked away in the deepest laboratory in the Terlingua lab, shortly after the last of the Deepcore Foundation fell apart; with the scattered remains of the company becoming the Frozen Core. The distant location of this lab, the amount of Living Ice in the area, and a lack of trust in Deepcore's surviving personnel makes it hard for people to determine for themselves if the device exists. Rumor says that Rhys Freed had blueprints with him that showed off various aspects and components for the machine, though those have gone missing over the years. What the machine required for it to fully function, according to Rhys; was a massive amount of energy that simply could not be obtained anymore, though the specifics of such details have remained unknown.   Unfortunately, Rhys Freed died on November 12th, 1975; found dead in his home in Ground Control by an unknown assailant.

Variations & Mutation

Different takes of The Planet Restoring Machine's full functions and what it would have required have been thrown about in the years since it began propagating throughout the land. Some people believe that had it been fully functioning, the machine would've created a world that could've bred more dangerous lifeforms. Others believe that it would have destroyed humans as the effects of it spread out, restoring the world to a natural state before their intervention. The most well-known propagators of this version of the device's purpose are the members of, believing that certain components within the device are actually mystical artifacts belonging to the god they worship. For what reason they believe as such is currently unknown.
