New Miami Settlement in OmniVerse | World Anvil

New Miami

New Miami is the name of a port-city that was established after World War III that is composed of the survivors from the destruction of Miami, and Cubans that had fled from Cuba after the country was destroyed in the war; before the ocean froze over. The long distance required to get to New Miami, as well as the fact that it's seen as a reminder of how much the world has changed; has led to people dubbing it to be 'In the middle of nowhere'.

Demographics

Around 35% of the population is Cuban-American, with the rest being divided up into White, African-American and Hispanic ethnicities. The population is spread out through the shoreside area of New Miami, with the population growing less and less dense the closer one gets to Old Miami.

Industry & Trade

New Miami, much like other ports such as Port Sinclair, get their Cigarettes from underwater fishing. Although it's a rather tricky thing to do with how thick the ice is, there has been some success in certain areas thanks to the efforts of using dynamite to blow a hole in the frozen ocean, and using underground caverns that are kept warm by Flame Edenite.

Infrastructure

Along with taking over older, more worn-down buildings that have been exposed to the elements and altering them as to be more sturdy and insulated from the cold, some people within New Miami have opted to construct new houses from the various trees, stone, and scrap metal in the area. The houses more or less stick out like a sore thumb, but this isn't entirely a concern for the residents of New Miami, seeking survivability over luxury.

History

Before World War III, Miami was world-famous metropolitan city located at the very tip of Florida. With a population of 300,000 people, it was a popular locale for vacation-goers in the summer as well as a town of rich culture. Alas, after World War III, it was one of the many cities that were hit in the insuring nuclear war between the super-powers of the world at the time. After the destruction of Miami, there were hundreds of survivors that had to seek refuge in parts of Miami; such as the underground bunkers located throughout the city; that had managed to be spared from the destruction and the nuclear fallout. After leaving the bunkers, people would begin to slowly rebuild their town from the ground up, albeit in areas away from the ruins that made up what was now Old Miami.   The Refounded established contact with the people living in New Miami in 1974, around 2 years after the group was created. Although there was some reluctance with joining up with The Refounded on the citizens of New Miami's part, they would eventually join up with them in 1975 after mayors of both cities at the time met and discussed terms.

Tourism

On some occasions, there'll be a few people that wish to stop in New Miami to explore the nearby wreckage of the DSM New Moon. Usually, these endeavors end up with the explorers coming back ill from the radiation and cold; with their memories of what occurred at the ship warped and distorted. Aside from this and the aforementioned fish trade, there's not really too much reason to come down to New Miami for some; especially because of the long distance to it.

I love the history behind the founding of New Miami. It makes sense that they'd want to build a little bit away from the ruins of old Miami.
