Death of the Moon Myth in Omari | World Anvil

Death of the Moon

Alright everyone, settle down. I know this week is a time to praise the moon and its savoir our ancestors were given, but we must also tell of what may happen if we were to lose that gift.
— A lore keeper addressing a group in their village during the Moon Festival.

Omari's Moon means a lot to a majority of the Oizai community. Even though their beloved "deity" Uxali is no longer on the planet, they feel the moon still holds a part of him and plan events around its cycle. Full moons are especially important. It is only natural for them to fear the possibility of anything happening to the moon.

An Ill Omen From a Dream

This myth came about after the oracle Callisto Moondrinker had a prophetic dream one midwinter night. He awoke in a cold sweat and frantically wrote it down in a journal. That morning, Collisto addressed his village and they agreed it was a sign. Word soon spread and the warning grew into a tale that would pass through generations.

I've been hit with a horrid premonition. May these images of doom never cross over to our realm from the land of dreams. I must write it down with haste, least I lose any details.   I was sitting atop the hill, enjoying the light of our beautiful moon and all the stars surrounding it. My eyes scanned the sky, hoping to catch sight of our dear Uxali still out there. I only had the violet hue of the moon to soothe me. The night was quiet and still.   Soon a breeze picked up, rustling the grass and tickling my wings. I blinked. Within seconds a shower of purple feathers rained from the sky. I strained my neck as I frantically searched to see if Uxali was near and in danger. There was nothing and as I stood, a chill overtook me. My eyes turned to the moon once more. With a resounding crack louder than any thunder I've heard before, the violet light disappeared in an instant. I felt weak and nearly fell. Just as the moon turned black, I awoke with a start.
— An entry from Collisto's dream journal.

Collisto never received any other dreams to clarify the meaning of his haunting visions. It is now a common belief that if the moon's light were to ever go out completely, devastation will soon follow. Lunar eclipses are feared the most. Oizai are also weary around new moons, fearful the next lunar cycle will not start.

Moon Cursed

These folk are not common, as they are individuals born on the night of a lunar eclipse. Oizai and other communities who worship Uxali fear these rare moments, especially after Collisto reported what happened in his dream. The moon cursed are said to have a lot of mishaps in their life. They also struggle to connect to magic.   Oizai are typically an accepting folk, but the more superstitious lot tend to shun the cursed and try to keep them from their communities. Those forced to leave their village can typically find shelter at various safe havens that welcome everybody, no matter the circumstance of their birth.

That does sound like a terrifying dream. I would definitely be wary of eclipses and new moons after hearing that.
