Festival of Grenlow

Each year, on the 5th of Ahmago, the cities of the Freelands celebrate the formation of the Freeland Cooperative Government which is commonly believed to be at the heart of their prosperity and protects them from any aggressive action from the empires.   Nowhere is this celebration larger or more important to local culture than in the city of Freeport where it is called the Festival of Grenlow after the founder of the city. People flock from all over to be in Freeport during this special time. The festival lasts for five days, starting with the first of the month and culminating on the anniversary. Fishermen from all along the cost bring their catches and the festival is filled with fish fries, clam bakes, seafood delicacies, and more than a little ale.   The festival also has carnival games, performances by famous bards including those from the Ship of Fools, and contests of strength and prowess. A drinking contest kicks off the first day and ensures that festival-goers won't be late arrivals. Keeping them there all five days is easy as the most anticipated contest is always the Fishing Derby which takes place on the last day. Hundreds of small fishing boats take to Grenlow's Bay to see if they can be the one to snag the biggest fish. The winner is crowned King or Queen of the festival and as fisherman are reknowned for their stories he or she who won the Derby will drink for free in any of the pubs in town as long as they keep the tales coming.
