Transhumanity
Transhumanity, often referred to as "humanity" for brevity, is the category encompassing Homo sapiens as well as all of its descendants or "forks". As contact and cultural intermingling with xenosophont (alien) clades and technological collaboration has increased, there has been increased - if slow - merging with xenosophont forks, especially robotic, but transhumanity remains a coherent and relevant category.
As modern transhumans almost all use cyberbrains and most employ bioengineered or robotic bodies, direct biological "species" descriptions as such do not hold as strict primacy as they once did. Nevertheless, the literature on Homo sapiens remains relevant for historical purposes where other reasons do not apply, and the history of transhuman neurotechnological development certainly retains much of the shape imparted to it by the biology of H. sapiens, including many neurological modes, proclivities and human tics.
Modern transhumans are often understood, very roughly speaking, via a collection of factors like so:
- Cyberbrain hardware schema.
- Cyberbrain software.
- Body in use (or sim inhabited).
- History of the above.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bipedal with 2 arms and 2 legs with a head and torso remains common as among H. sapiens, though often supplemented by additional sub-appendages and usually a snout and tail. Cyberbrains are typically housed in the torso or head. Cyberbrains are fairly heavy due to their armor layers.
Genetics and Reproduction
Childrearing in the cyberbrain age has undergone significant changes, and many children do not start as blank slates, so to speak. A sort of alternative is common in the form of "forking", which means forking off a copy of one's mind to be instated as another person, with identical memories, skills, etc. The Mandate offers certain benefits to "fork families" who participate in its International Citizens program, which recruits citizens of Mandate nations for infrastructural projects in the multiversal periphery.
Ecology and Habitats
Transhumans require similar physics to their original universe to survive, although the restrictions have grown more lax as better tolerances and more robust engineering has brought a wider range of hyperspace into the purview of transhuman habitability. Transhumans generally prefer carbon and water environments at 20°C.
