Capu

Header image: The view from Capu of planet Matroya from the city of Calabaro, West Loesa   Capu is a moon of the gas giant planet Matroya, a part of the Alsifer system. It is a supra-Mars sized world in the liquid water zone of its star, and possesses significant lake and sea coverage, though it is comparatively dry with respect to Earth. Notably, while it has continents, there is too little water to form oceans between them, so the continental crust manifests as vastly tall "altiplanos" that rise gently from the basaltic basins that would form oceans on a proper Earth twin.   The world is home to Olpe, an apparent fork of Transhumanity that became stranded in EvaLHN 2E22, probably following an event similar to the Abduction at Sylvia which initiated the multiversal era as we know it. Olpe external appearance is modeled largely after goats. It is also home to Voa, a flighted sophont species noted for their biological jet engines; and the Angels, a species of bipedal giants.   Society on the world is particularly noteworthy for having re-achieved space travel without the use of electrical technology. By the time contact was made by Federation explorers in 5477, Capuans had established expansive habitats in the habitable gas ring called the Mashveya.

Geography

Capu is a cold, arid world; much of its water is locked up in expansive ice caps, while seas and lakes spread out across the rest - none deep and expansive enough to qualify as an ocean, but sufficient to generate wet forested conditions across significant swaths of the globe. Continental altiplanos rise gently from the borders of the basins where oceans would be, flattening out several kilometers above the datum line. Some continental mountains are tall enough to reach into the mesosphere.   With a surface gravity of 0.4 gees, jumping is very easy. Conversely, Capuans require significant adaptation to walk under the 1 gee standard common throughout Transhuman Space.   The moon orbits Matroya on a relatively long period of several standard Earth days per Capu day; this causes a permanent thermal gradient between the day side and the night side that drives strong winds and storm conditions across the daylight terminator. To brace themselves against the "twilight monsoon", many cities are built largely underground inside raised mounds.

Fauna & Flora

Capu is home to many strains of bioluminscent microflora, which make its shores and standing waters glow visibly from orbit at nighttime.   A curious quirk of Capuan life is that most organisms with feet have hooves - that is, fingertips capped by a smooth sheath of hard structural protein comparable to keratin. Among Earth organisms, by contrast, claws are the majority.

Natural Resources

As a tectonically active terrestrial moon, Capu possesses reserves of rare lithophiles (rare earth elements, HFSEs, LILEs) at sufficient ore grades to be of interest to miners in the multiversal economy. Its human-compatible xenoecology also makes it a prime target of biochemical study and engineering.
