Enlandic

Enlandic is a religion initially founded by Ignalius late into the Third Age. The purpose of founding this religion was to more easily inspire nearby settlements to convert and pledge themselves to the burgeoning empire of Mankind. The theory was that if the men and women of nearby towns and hamlets believed their servitude to a King and his Kingdom was a divine calling, it would inspire them to bridge the gaps between the vastly different pockets of humanity scattered about the continent.    Enlandic itself is really just the more common parts of Old Enlandic folklore collected together with a fresh coat of doctrine. At the center of this religion is Tartarus, the god of Light and Faith. In antiquity, Tartarus was known as Tar'tarun, and was little more than a lesser spirit thought to coax out the flames of campfires or alter beams of sunlight to allow a little more of it into darkened rooms.     In the Enlandic system, Tartarus lives in a tall volcano far to the north, known only as Varshuul. He rules the lands with his several daughters, which include Cancer, Libra, and Aquarius. Tartarus and his daughters are believed to govern the stars, each constellation said to represent an "avatar" of each goddess.     According to the religion, Tartarus influences Mankind and ushers in change periodically to set it on the right path whenever it begins to stray from his divine light. He does this by speaking to a Council of wisemen (also first created by Ignalius), suggesting to them who should be the next ruler of Asmaria. After several days in silent meditation, the Council announce who Tartarus has chosen as the rightful heir to the throne, whether they are a relative of the previous king or not does not matter so long as Tartarus chose them.     Tartarus also speaks to the Council when he decides on a Head Sarthling (a high priest who governs the temples and places of worship across Asmaria). The new King and the new Head Sarthling are chosen at around the same time, usually being given power within only a week or so of each other.     Enlandic beliefs decree that magic is wholly evil and aberrant, many believers claiming it strays from Tartarus's light. As such, there are no gods of magic in this religion. Furthermore, priests and Sarthlings are unable to harness any powers from their god or his daughters, the very concept never having been considered either by Ignalius or his god.
