A low-fantasy world wherein an industrial revolution has recently been kickstarted by discovering the means to harvest and capture lightning. Fleets of seafaring ships seek out brewing storms, to capture their bolts with metal-lined kites while wings of airships riddled with lightning rods look for promising clouds on the horizon.
The red lightning captured by these whalers of the new age powers flameless lights, manless machinery and horseless carriages. These new ideas coexist with centuries old institutions however. Such as the garden churches, paying homage to the goddess who shaped the world from a seed of the heavenly tree, or the conjurers who summon spirits of fire and smoke asking for their wisdom and advice.
Conflict arises between progress and tradition when encroaching on each others turf. But neither new technologies nor ancient wisdoms can stop what creeps from the Veiled Realm. A world exists beyond the mortal one, containing all that will ever be and all that ever was. Like eb and flow it brings to and takes from the mortal realm. But when it overflows, what is, what was and what will converge in strange and weird ways.
The focal point of the setting is the Imperial Commonwealth, a multi-ethnic, multi-religious empire build upon the fractured remains of its two precursor powers. Bonds between the groups who hold power are thin, and while it is the centre of the lightning-powered revolution, its newfound wealth and progress is not necessarily beneficial.
