Personal history

Born in Lubbock, Texas, Derrick grew up a farmhand on his family's farm, as did his father, grandfather, and so on. Derrick did well in school as a child, but was often getting in trouble for starting fights. His parents punished him, but not as harshly as they possibly should've, as he was always fighting bullies that would pick on other kids, being a "bully's bully," for lack of a better term.   When Derrick was in high school, a group with the U.S. military came to give a presentation for the school, explaining the highlights of joining the armed forces, while glossing over the more... unfortunate parts. Derrick was singled out by recruiters, due to the recommendations of his teachers and coaches, and quickly signed up to join the Marines after finishing High School. Having the best score out of his school on his aptitude test helped matters. Derrick began taking double courses his sophomore year of high school in order to graduate early. He graduated in 2012, at the age of 17, with a 3.5 GPA. He joined the military in February of 2013, shortly after turning 18.   Derrick spent one four year tour in Iraq as a squad member within the Marines before quickly making it up the ladder to Lance Corporal. Upon reaching LCpl, Derrick began the course to join the USMC Scout Snipers, and completed the course almost at the top of the group. Serving for another 2 years as a leader of a Sniper team, Derrick eventually climbed to the rank of Staff Sergeant on merit alone, which would normally move him to a staff position, away from combat. Derrick instead requested to still be involved with protection to some degree, so he was moved to the Saudi Arabian embassy as a security lead. He worked there for another year until growing tensions between the locals and the US military caused the current president to withdraw troops from the area, as a sign of good faith.   Due to his extended service record and training, Derrick received multiple college credits toward a degree of his choice, and he completed a Bachelor's degree in Physical education in just a year and a half, due to also taking online subject courses when he had the free time. He eventually found work with a school in Baltimore that wanted someone with more... experience in things besides classwork. He re-integrated into society well enough, but he has a hard time adjusting to not being on edge at all times. He attends a Veteran's group twice a month, hoping to have others to connect with. He also goes to therapy once a week on Saturdays.

Session 1 - Pilot
May 2nd, 2022

Middle of the day.

Starting in Frederick Douglass High, an impromptu meeting between the teachers and principal sprung up about a student, though not initially surprising. Jeremiah Williams, a middling student with possible gang involvement, didn't show up for any of his detentions over the weekend, nor did he show up on the previous Friday. The standout, and worrying, circumstance involves the Vice Principal, who discovered that the family had been evicted from their home and had been living in a hotel. It also came to light that Jeremiah hadn't been living with them for months. Jeremiah's family wasn't concerned, and, when he didn't show up again on Monday, the school decided to file a missing persons report. Derrick was informed that he should expect the police to come in and question him within the next day or so, and that a substitute would be provided if it was during class time throughout the day.

Later that day, during one of Derrick's P.E. classes, the Baltimore P.D. stopped by for some questioning, led by a mountain of a man named Officer Wallard. Derrick explained what little he knew about Jeremiah, including the falling out between him and his good friend Derek(nickname Boogey), before remembering that a classmate of his, by the name of Victor(nickname Vic), was the last person to get in a fight with him. After catching Vic in a few lies, he admitted that he was a supplier of marijuana to Jeremiah, and that Jeremiah owed him around $200 dollars. They got in a fight when Vic went to collect, but Vic didn't think anything more intense was necessary. Vic eventually gave Wallard and his partner the address that Jeremiah typically dropped off his supply. Vic mentioned the small-time gang "267ers" that Jeremiah supposedly ran with. Vic also backed up the claim that Boogey no longer associated himself with Jeremiah. Vic had nothing left to say, so Derrick dismissed him back to gym class.

The Vice Principal eventually rejoined Officer Wallard and Derrick, with Boogey in tow. Boogey is a particularly scrawny kid, almost looking like a middle schooler. Boogey initially said that he didn't know where Jeremiah was, but, upon being questioned by Wallard, immediately changed emotionally to a mix between anger and sadness. He didn't approve of Jeremiah's involvement with drugs. Boogey had confronted Jeremiah with it, but Jeremiah responded that he had to. Jeremiah didn't like that Boogey believed it to be a cop-out and ended the relationship. Boogey mentioned that Jeremiah didn't sell on 267er territory, but sold to isolated people, as the gang didn't take kindly to profits being infringed on. He also said that Jeremiah would sleep in the Boiler room under the school when he couldn't find anywhere else to stay. Boogey was dismissed after satisfactorily answering Wallard's questions. Before the Vice Principal could lead the officers to the basement, he had to respond to a fight elsewhere in the building. Derrick guided them down there instead. After looking around the room, they found evidence of someone staying there, as well as a slip of paper with a phone number on the front with the initials "T.C." on the back. Wallard slipped it into an evidence bag before Derrick could note it down himself. Derrick caught the last four digits, but nothing else. However, he did spot a particularly noteworthy bandanna. It was a striking blue color, not one that would be common in a store. the color was indicative of the 267s. Derrick pointed it out to Wallard, who gathered it for evidence as well. Blakely also found a pamphlet for a church known as the First Unitarian, as well as a homeless shelter that they run nearby. Feeling that they've gained all of the information available at the school, the officers decide to move on to look into the First Unitarian church. Wallard gave Derrick his card, just in case any new information were to come to light with Jeremiah. Derrick, wanting to press his luck, asked Blakely for her number as well. She, being taken aback by the request, obliged and gave him her card as well, which also contained her personal cellphone number. Derrick thanked her, and the officers went on their way.

Knacks

  • A Vigil (Guardian) - When you stand guard over a person, place, or thing, you do not need to eat or sleep so long as your vigil persists. This benefit extends so long as the protected target remains within your sight. You may do other things — talk, interact, move around, etc. — but must devote most of your time to keeping your vigil. You may only keep vigil over one thing at a time.

  • Keen-Eyed Predator (Hunter) [Calling] - When you enter a Field, you extend your senses to determine what might await you. Ask one question from the following list for free. You may roll your Knack Skill and spend one success per additional question. The Storyguide must answer these questions honestly:
--What kinds of hazards (such as terrain) are present?
    --Where is the nearest exit?
--Where is the safest way in?
--How many hostile enemies are present?
--Who (or what) is the biggest threat?

  • Lighthouse of Society (Leader) - In a tense, heated, or chaotic situation, you stand as a beacon of certain leadership. Your presence is a bulwark against fear and panic. As long as a crowd has not been frightened directly by magical means, you can get a group of people to act calm and do as you ask (such as evacuating a dangerous area) in an orderly fashion without needing to roll. A supernatural situation requires a Clash of Wills. For example, if an enemy Scion of Eris sows panic into a crowd of mortals so they’ll bolt and trample each other, a roll would be made against her. If Poseidon creates a tidal wave that happens to scare people because natural disasters are terrifying, a roll would not be made against him.

Deeds

  • Short Term: Make friends with some of the locals.

  • Long Term: Move past the actions he regrets in the military.
