Shaw Hughes has lived in London his whole life. His mother died when he was six years old, and this left him and his functioning alcoholic of a father spiraling into a life of degeneracy and crime. Their first major haul together involved making off with a significant portion of the newly opened Malvern Water bottling facility's stock, a feat which they both claim contributed to that location's closure several years later.
Mister Hughes, as he's generally known to his companions, speaks with a low, gravely voice that defies his otherwise small, sharp features. He slouches naturally and has a tendency to rub his hands together during conversation, as though to keep them occupied.
His current line of steady work is as a 'catalogue agent' for C.W. Bailey & Son, though his most of his coworkers know not to ask too many questions about how he came by the volumes he brings in. He sets his near-perfect memory to memorizing the contents of the little bookstore, which he puts to use to aid those seeking rare tomes, and to facilitate trade for valuable stock, should the need arise. He owes the job to his cousin, Margaret McGill, who insisted there was good money to be made there for a man of his talents. So far, he has not been disappointed.
