Emperor
The title of Emperor (from the Remaric imperator ("commander")) is traditionally the highest secular rank, denoting an individual with control over massive geographic areas. This control need not be, and usually isn't, direct. As they rule without oversight, emperors are not usually granted the title, but rather simply declare that they are an emperor, and it is thus one of the most preferred titles for warlords and petty bandit kings. An emperor almost always rules an empire, but an empire is not necessarily ruled by an emperor, since the term "empire" is often used to denote power, scope, and influence rather than a specific ruling system, for example the mGya rKhar Empire.
"Emperor" is a somewhat generic term that merges into itself a variety of local terms for absolute rulers with substantial holdings. These include sultans, grand pharaohs, and huei tlatoani, tsars. and of course the Phoenix Emperors of Qikuo, all of which have roughly the same connotations and authority. Other titles are widely held to be of equal status with an emperor, but lack the absolute authority characteristic of a true holder of that title. This latter group includes high kings, shahanshahs, the raven queens of Varshalshka, and kahans.
