Dawnwood

Dawnwood is a rare type of wood that has only been found in the Underdark. This material is different in that, once it is exposed to sunlight for a small period of time, it hardens to a metallic strength. Once it hardens, it is very difficult to shape into a final product. Noble families commission statues built of Dawnwood because of its colors and the faint light that emanates from it. It is also possible to create armor and shields from this material that is more effective than those crafted from metals. It is believed to contain magical properties, however, none have yet investigated this further. It is an expensive material primarily because of how rare it is and how dangerous it is to obtain, often requiring a well-prepared adventuring party to deal with any dangers encountered and a crew to harvest and carry the Dawnwood back to the surface.

Dawnwood appears as any other wood. What sets Dawnwood apart is that it emits a faint glow and it is colored purple, blue and orange.

Dawnwood is located within the Underdark. There are a few known locations that Dawnwood can be found, but most have been claimed by trading companies that wish have a controlled source from which to collect.

Dawnwood is taken from the Aurora Tree.

History & Usage

History

Dawnwood, since its introduction into the market, has been in demand by those with wealth. Initially it was in demand because of its rarity, but now it is slightly more common and is a mark of wealth. It has also gained popularity as a material for use within certain temples.

Discovery

Dawnwood was discovered by a Kenku named Splitter roughly 20 years ago when he and a party of adventurers delved into the Underdark in search of hidden treasures.

From Dawnwood, statues, shields, armors, bows, and arrows can be manufactured.

Distribution

Trade & Market

Dawnwood is a luxury material. It is primarily available from three companies, but some Dawnwood products can be found on black markets. It is rare to find raw Dawnwood that is still in a pre-hardened state for sale on a black market. Although, some dealers will advertise it as so in order to sell it.

Storage

Raw Dawnwood must be kept in complete darkness, the only exception being light from a magical source.
