Ostedor Names and Sagas
Among the clans of Ostedor, a name and the saga tied to it is a sacred thing. For it is the Jarls who gift names to their clansman and those who are nameless are often considered lower than beasts.
Birth:
Upon the birth of a new member within the walls of one of the eight great cities of Ostedor, a babe is to remain unnamed until the Jarl names the youngling. To receive a name is a great honor that not all are gifted.
If the child does not receive a name from the Jarl it is usually because the parents do not have a Saga or if they do the Saga is not reveared enough to warrant a name to be given.
Though if a Jarl sees potential in the youngling or if a seer foretells of greatness the Jarls may give a name taking on the risk of dishonor on themselves.
If the family of the youngling is in good standing with the city then they will be named after the occupation of the family until they come of age and choose their own occupation. A blacksmith for example might be named Smith or Quelch. A baker may be named Wheat or Starch. A child of parents who have a Saga may be named "Child of", "Son of" or "Daughter of" until the youngling earns their name. To the named the individuality is of little importance, to gain individuality is a feat that must be earned. Saga: There is nothing more important than the Saga for those born of Ostedor. Your story is who you are. Without it and your name you are considered nothing. When you have a saga people speak of it and share it, they know who are you are from your story. If our Saga is woven with other Sagas either by parents, shared glory, or defeated foes then it commands more weight, consideration, and reverence. Though Sagas can be tarnished or lost, for this to happen is a painful experience. So a Saga is coveted, nurtured, and respected. Outsiders: Those who are from other realms who find themselves within one of the walled cities of Ostedor find themselves being called "Traveller", "Outsider", "Outlander" or by their race or if they are in good standing by their occupation. Though many may settle in the cities and call each other by names they have been given at birth or other to Ostedorians they are still unnamed until they have earned names from the Jarls and will not recognize them. Nameless: To lose your name means the end of your Saga. When a named one is stripped of their name their Saga ends unless the Jarl gifts the name to another. A named one would lose their name by it being stripped from them due to dishonorment, most commonly after losing a challenge of the rite of succession though there are many other ways to lose it. When a named one becomes nameless they are considered under beasts and many exile them or simply ignore them, to give kind to a nameless risk inviting dishonor. Heirloom Names: Heirloom names are considered the highest honor, to be gifted an Heirloom name is to be given the right to continue the saga of those who have held the name before. Their Saga and your Saga become one, woven together. Not even the Jarls have the power to give Heirloom names without the council of each other and the recognition of the people of Ostedor.
