Miners Rebellion Military Conflict in Nys | World Anvil

Miners Rebellion

The conflict known as "Miners Rebellion" which took place in 1862 has been, to date, the only attempt to overthrow the exploitation of slaves in the salt mines in Dźike perpetrated by the Salt Trading Company.   Nadim Neśpal, ex-member of a slaver family, rallies the slaves against their oppressors and lead them in a bloody battle in the mines themselves, in an increasingly desperate attempt to gain freedom.   The rebellion ended within a few hours after the first mutiny, with about 60% of the miners dead, including their leader Nadim and 25% of the Company's guard. The Company was the only side reporting numbers and the story after the events, so most people think they vastly exaggerated facts in their favour.

The Conflict

Prelude

Nadim was a young woman from a wealthy family of merchants who hold some shares in the Salt Trading Company. She turned against her family and the organization when a friend of her (maybe her lover) was tricked into debt and sold as a slave in the mines. She sneaked inside and fled with him and a handful of miners in the wilderness.   From that moment on, she started organizing increasingly bold undermining against the Company until she came up with a plan to rally and lead to freedom of all the slaves in the mines. Four adventurers, later revealed to be bounty hunters the Company sent after her, helped her lay the plan out.   Nadim sneaked inside the mines with her friend and the adventurers and started to rally the slaves. Everything went well for the first half an hour until the bounty hunters betrayed her, and the escape became a conflict.

Aftermath

The Company emerged victorious with limited losses in terms of personnel but vastly damaged in terms of property. A part of the mines collapsed due to the use of uncontrolled magic during the battle. Bridges, walls, beams and rails were damaged in several sectors. The miners used mining tools as improvised weapons, destroying a large portion of them.   Moreover, the Company had killed its slaves, further harming its economic position. And with only half the slaves in the mines, who would repay for the damages?   First, the Company sought out families and friends of the killed slaves and forced them to pay for the slave debt and the additional damaged the uprising caused. If they opposed, the slavers would sent bounty hunters after them, threatening to involve justice and the Law-House.   Unfortunately, they did not raise the money they hoped for in this way. Unsatisfied, they looked for everyone who happened to help Nadim in her travels. The number of people they found was so high that it led many to think the Company involved innocent people to reintegrate the miners' ranks.   Overall, the effects of the rebellion on the population were disastrous, but the Company emerged stronger than ever. They proved not only that an uprising would be ineffective in achieving its goals but also it would harm poor people even more.
