Palawyr

The island continent of Palawyr; a kingdom once diverse and thriving, now fallen under the bitter reign of an Elven despot who hoards magic jealously. Empress Aeonare has decreed all magics are the sole and sovereign property of the Crown, and harsh penalties are dealt to any caught wielding any form of magic whatsoever without express dispensation.   The Orcish tribe, called Grulmak, have little use for magic, but where once they trafficked peacefully with the towns and villages of the coast, now they keep mostly to themselves, but for a strained and bitter trade in materials from the mines they still hold. The Empire of The Dawn threatens them, and their lands, and while it is not the Grulmak way to be driven under heel, they recognize that their numbers are too few. Open warfare would demolish the tribe utterly. The Chieftain, Nara'hauk, bides, with gnashing teeth... for now.   The Dwarves of Mount Faungrym likewise are not wielders nor casters, but deep in their own cavernous realm lay ancestral artifacts which they know all too well the Empress, in her greed, would seek to claim, and so they too have retreated, barring the roads to their buried kingdom, and keeping their own council. It is not known whether they, like the Grulmak, simply endure, or if their ringing hammers are forging the metals of war.   As we open our tale, the North coast of Palawyr is wracked with brutal storms, a curse, some local sailors say, upon the shores, for the Empress' defiance of the Gods. While in the past, trade ships occasionally visited these harbors, none dare now approach. A single cargo vessel, the Salton Rose, rocks angrily against her moorings in the harbor, trapped for more than a week, unable to make way. Along the beachhead, splintered wood, tattered canvas, and crushed and broken barrels litter the sodden sand- More than one ship, it seems, has fallen victim to the harsh gauntlet of wind, wave, and stone.

Geography

Palawyr's climate ranges from temperate in the North to tropical in the southern regions, it's mountainous interior giving birth to a wealth of alpine springs which feed an extensive river system. Coastlines to the North and west are characterized with rocky beaches and sea cliffs, while the Eastern quarter is dominated by a vast coastal wetland. The southern-most coastline is graced with pale beaches and rolling grassland.

Fauna & Flora

Like it's climate, the island teams with a diversity of wildlife, among them, a good number of dangerous predators. Wild fruits and grains are abundant, along with a great diversity of fish and fowl.

Natural Resources

The geologic resources found in the mountains of Palawyr include copper, iron, silver, gold, and tin, as well as precious stones, and masonry. The Northern end of the largest mountain range on Palawyr are known as The White Mountains, and the Grulmak have several deep mines there for extracting alabaster, gypsum, and limestone, and in those regions, chalcedony, amethyst, opal, and carnelian can be found. Deeper to the south where the mountains are more deeply striated and colorful, and are known as The Painted Peaks, metal ores, such as copper, silver, iron, and gold, are extracted, along with malachite, turquoise, tourmaline, and lapis lazuli.
