Winkelried Monastery

Just north of Ilphelkirton, overlooking the sea, is the Winkelried Monastery. Founded centuries ago, it has become the major school of the healing arts. The Monastery is run by the Hesterian monks, a clerical order dedicated to healing all who need it. The monks train here and then go out into the world to heal all who are sick or wounded. Their expertise in healing without magic or divine energy is sought by all. To be sure, many of the monks can use divine energy to heal, but only in cases where it other means have failed. While there are other clerical orders that have the power to heal, only the Herterian monks are experts in nonmagical healing. Many other orders and faiths send people to train at Winkelried and its' satellite shrines.   The secondary purpose of the Monastery (and the monks) is to train others (especially commoners) to use medical practices to save lives or at least sustain life long enough to get to a monk. At the many Winkelried shrines, commoners are trained as midwives, herbalists, and general practitioners. This training has been traditionally free to all as part of the readiness proclamation of 58040. Training in the specialties (Dentistry, Veterinary, Beautification, or others) is done only at Winkelried.   To augment the ability of the Hesterian order to heal (and to bring in money which is always welcome) there are specialized subsects that manufacture healing items. One creates healing salves, ointments, and potions. Another scribes scrolls. Still others prepare alternative items related to healing such as wands and censors.   The monastery has grown to house over 1000 staff and students. It's hospital is clean and well kept. The Winkelried Library has a vast collection of manuscripts, scrolls, and tomes on every subject that touches on physical health. Recently, the Winkelried Monastery held a world forum on the topic of mental health. Again, the Hesterians are leading the way in medicine and the overall health of the individual.
