Nuclear Gaia: A Post Apocalyptic Fantasy World

This is a world in which fantasy creatures have coexisted with humans since time began. Because of this, history in this world is drastically different from our own. Despite this, tensions are still high between the East and the West during most of the 20th Century.   These tensions would eventually come to an end on August of 1999, in the form of the Annihilation War. Missiles from every country and continent around the globe launched high into the air, bringing devastation and nuclear fallout wherever they detonated. Millions of lives were gone in a near instant.   All hope was not lost, however. In the event that such a thing were to happen, the United States Government implemented a contingency plan into every major city across the country. The idea was, if a nuclear war were to break out, the cities and their people would be safe, and after the fallout had cleared, the greenlight would be given to rebuild America back to it's prewar glory.   However, things did not go according to plan. Only a small number of cities survived the war, and Washington D.C.'s defenses were sabotaged by infiltrating communist spies, leaving the few remaining cities to fend for themselves. Despite this, life persists, and the survivors of the war are retaking the American Wasteland, one small step at a time.
