Order Of The Aster

The Church of Lathander has a knightly orders of paladins, crusaders, and fighters known as the Order of the Aster. Members of this order protect temples and shrines, serve to lead large military groups levied as needed to serve the church, and roam the land seeking to do good in Lathander's name and promote his worship. Individual temples and shrines of Lathander do not usually maintain standing military forces of substantial size due to their cost, although they often retain warriors and members of the Order of the Aster to guard their establishments in numbers that each temple decides are appropriate and affordable.   The Order of the Aster serves as the church army of the faithful of Lathander. In alliance with devotees of the Moonmaiden and other like-minded deities, members of the order, sometimes known as Soldiers of the Light, continue their eternal battle with the forces of darkness and destruction, specifically the followers of Bane, Shar, and Talos.   Each member of the Order of the Aster is assigned to a company of the Morningbord's church army. Each company is housed in one of a dozen or so church-sponsored abbeys scattered across western and central FaeriTh. Companies are dispatched by the commanding abbot to battle enemies of the faith, usually in response to an entreaty from a high-ranking cleric of the Morninglord. Between tours of service, members of the order are frequently given leave to pursue their own goals. Most, spend their time defending individual temples of the Morninglord, but some serve the faith by becoming adventurers. In Waterdeep, many members of the Order of the Aster contribute to the defense of the City of Splendors by serving in the City Guard.   The order of the Aster serves as the church army of the faithful of Lathander. Membership

The order was loosely organized and comprised crusaders, fighters, and paladins dedicated to Lathander. The paladins often trained in other discipline and served as divine champions, disciples, hierophants, and even counted some members among Purple Dragon knights of Cormyr.   While all members of the order were devotees of Lathander with a comprehensive understanding of the church's teachings, some members had achieved the rank of Sunmaster within the divine hierarchy.   While members were not required to pay a fee upon entrance into the order, they did make a solemn vow to a standing Morninglord. The order's barracks were located one block from the main cathedral in Waterdeep and held 80 templars. The organization had a monthly due of 50 gp to be paid once per month.

    Activities

Members usually defended Lathanderite shrines and temples commanded large military forces levied by the church of Lathander when required. Individual shrines and temples of Lathander typically did not maintain significant defensive forces of their own, owing to the cost, so they instead usually retained the Order's services to guard their holy sites, in appropriate numbers.   When not thus engaged, the holy warriors of the order wandered the realms promoting the faith of Lathander and doing good deeds in his name. Many spent their time defending individual Lathanderite temples or served within the City Guard of Waterdeep.

    Dogma

The paladins of the Aster were often more conservative and by-the-book than clerics of Lathander.
