Boniver

Demographics

The main population is half gnome, and half human, with a lite sprinkling of half-elves, and an even smaller community of dionysians.

Government

Boniver is a society that runs solely on its mines, and as such the ruling body believes that every young man is destined to work in the mine. Thus before a young man can get a job in another field, he must spend at least five years as a miner, but given the lack of job opportunities, he'll still be working in or for the mines somehow, either as an engineer, or a pick repair man--just to name a few. At random times a work raffle is held, usually when there's a drop off in miners, or when a mass cave in occurs, and a large amount of workers died.

Defences

The top side of Boniver is protected by its location, nestled in the mountain cluster know as "The Red Mountains," but these offer little protection from the countless "midnight creepers" that roam the mountains, thus a large garrison of about five hundred to a thousand men have been conscripted for the job. Below ground is a different story, as more people live below ground, thus more men are needed to protect against monsters below ground. But invasion from outside forces are rare, and if anyone tried to make it underground, they'd be lost in a maze of tunnels.

Industry & Trade

Mining is the name of the game, and the only thing that comes close to rivaling that business is tourism into the more exotic areas of the city.

Infrastructure

To prevent mana poisoning from Fairy Dust, the engineers of Boniver have constructed large metal doors that seal off these mines from the rest of the cluster, as well as air filtration units--these systems are even used in caves that are too far down below, and other caves even have emergency filtration units built in for when a lethal substance is unearthed, and in the settled areas of the cluster. Mine carts have been replaced with "gem trolleys" to traverse the cluster, helping the working man reach the mines from his home, and back again in time for the surprise work raffle.

Assets

Many gems, precious metals, and kilos of Fairy Dust are mined from Boniver's vast subterranean network, and many stores and inns cater to the working man, and for out of cavers--as Bonners like to call them--there's such lovely sights as "The Maw," a vast cavern of stalactites/stalagmites that have been turned into dwellings, with a natural underground waterfall that feeds a river, which runs through this craggy village.

Guilds and Factions

Given the size of Boniver, there are five guilds that run the mining business, but The Fairy Men stand out above these, as they are more ruthless and stubborn than there counterparts, for they want nothing to get in the way of their Fairy Dust trade.

History

Boniver once started as a simple mining settlement to mine iron from The Red Mountains, consisting of only gnomes and humans, and mining and trading iron was the main trade, till they mines grew deeper, and more precious metals and gems were found--even Fairy Dust, but this didn't become legal until 1842. With how deep the mines became, it soon became necessary to build homes within the mine, and more exotic areas underneath the mountains were settled.

Tourism

Despite the dangers involved in travelling the mountains, most people travel to Boniver through a safe route--travelling all the way to the free cities on eastern Verte-Paysage's northern coasts, and heading to Boniver, which lies in the northern part of the mountains--to see the more exotic locales underground. Such locales included a vast cavern of geodes, The Maw, and The Crystalline Fountains.

Architecture

The houses and buildings are carved out of the rock itself--in both the above and below ground parts of the city--and in The Maw the homes are carved from the stalactites and stalagmites. Even in the working areas, people have made their homes in the mines for convenience.

Natural Resources

The whole of the underground gets water from the river that flows through the maw, while above ground, denizens collect water from a river that flows through the mountains.
