Personal history
She was a top of her class student during her first year at wistworking school, but after the initial praise from her teachers wore off, she became more and more jaded with how her school and family treated her.
She demanded respect, to be acknowledged as the person she wanted to be, but her cries for support were rarely acknowledged, and when they were, it was too often with disdain.
Her one teacher that was kind to her was all that kept her attending at all, rather than skipping school to hang out with the other delinquents. Ms. Morian was always there to talk after class, and had been a great adult to trust when no others were there.
During the longest and most boring lectures, going over material that Frances had mastered twice over, she would turn her attention to the other students in the class.
A swiped skirt here, a splash of water there, she always had some cruel hijinx to get up to when she felt like it. She loved getting the reactions from others, proving her superiority to students that surely thought her a dullard for all her sleeping through class.
Of course, many went to the teachers and headmaster to tattle on her. They were such children.
Frances started making weekly appearances in the headmaster's quarters. He threatened many punishments, and Frances would do the labour, or spend the time in the corner, and put in the minimum effort to look good, but it seemed that she just couldn't even care enough to pretend anymore.
Ms. Morian asked her to stay after class one evening. Frances was being expelled. She wouldn't have any chance of being a mage now, surely no school would take her, let alone a university.
Frances was shocked. She had some of the best grades in her classes, and she was miles ahead of everyone else when it came to the practical exams. How could she be expelled?
But it was true. For all her hatred of the school, she knew she needed it to get to the next stage in her life. She liked talking to Ms Morian. What was she supposed to do now?
Ms. Morian said she had a friend, a woman who was teaching a small handful of students personally. She would put in a good word, beg to give Frances a chance, and in exchange Frances would give her a chance.
Frances agreed, and left the school with a bit of hope.
That hope was severely dashed when she saw the students she would be learning with. A mute child, a boy with eyesight bad enough to lose sight of his thread, a bumpkin from the far north who had an axe instead of wisthread, and a spoon in his mouth privileged kid with the worst possible thread she had ever seen.

She despises so much of the world. The adults are all backwards tradition riddled fools, and all the kids are idiot babies. She does what she wants because she owes nothing to nobody.
