In every village and town, people have to deal with the trash and other detritus of their lives. The imperial empire and immortals ensure people are well aware of the dangers of unclean streets, open sewers, and improper hygiene. Sometime in the forgotten years since the founding the idea of a family or group building up large amounts of detritus to be collected shifted to a more active environmentally effective process of recycling as much as possible of everything. Only a small percentage of items cannot be recycled and these end up in carefully coordinated areas to be processed by the Drayrotters.
Every single day in almost every large village, city, or town, a large number of carts or wagons traverse the city collecting the trash. These carts are all usually sealed against the air and kept meticulously clean. They are driven by one or two workers who collect and sort the trash into their carts. This includes excrement collection if the village does not have a complete sewer system.
Once collected the Drayrotters take the waste to various processing locations for proper handling. Metals are given to a foundry to be changed into usable stock. Organic waste is taken to composting sites where farmers and gardeners buy the compost and dung for their crop needs. Woods and other building materials are collected and repurposed for sale after being cleaned and cataloged.
In large settlements, Drayrotters are highly trained sorting and delivery operators for dealing with waste products. In smaller communities, Drayrotters perform most of the recycling themselves including small foundry work and material repurposing.
In spite of the extensive training and experience, Drayrotters have they are regularly overlooked by everyone. Many smiths and farmers feel they could get buy without someone putting themselves in the middle between the collection, recycling, and usage. However, any who try to cut out Drayrotters from the process soon learn how valuable Drayrotters are.
