Verakon Elervir

The Covenant-Alliance war caused death an devestation in Farlis on a scale not seen in centuries. Verakon Elervir is not the only person to blame, but he still is the main reason for all the suffering. The joy of his death will be sung about for many generations still.
— High Sage Syronikir

Varakon Elervir is one of the most influential people in the last decades, although not in a good way. He was the dictator of Mervidel for 53 years and the de-facto leader of the Magi Covenant during the Covenant-Alliance war.   He left a legacy of great loss and devestations for both Humans and Elves. And although the war has been over for a few years the wounds of the conflict are still very fresh.

Personal Life

Early Life

Like many High Elves living in Mervidel Verakon started a journey of magical knowledge. From an early age he was already keen on gaining the rank of College Magister. He started a bit earlier than the usual at the age of 60.   During his studies at the The Archtower college, he quickly became a favorite among the students due to his natural talent for magic. This was of course also due to the Elervir family arcane heritage. At around 224 years old he gained the rank of College Magister and a few decades later he already became a member of the Council of Colleges for several years.

Relationships

Verakon kept his private affairs mostly to himself and never revealed to much. To many he was not a pleasant person but he was known to have at least some friends. Many of them shared his sense for ambition. He had two wives during his lifetime and had 2 sons and 5 daughters.   When Verakon was killed in battle the new government sought to please the Alliance victors and captured his family. This did not go as intended as in the skirmish that followed 1 son and 3 daughters of Verakon were killed. The rest of his close family was imprisoned and handed over to the Eastern Alliance. They currently reside in the Bareniai prison island.

Personal History

Dictatorship

Normally when a new Archmage is chosen to rule Mervidel they have to stand down after 20 years of rule. Verakon was popular at first and was elected normally. However, after 14 years of rule many started to disagree with his extreme policies and sought to depose of him earlier. Knowing that he could not stay in power through normal means he chose to silence more an more members of the Council of Colleges.   To achieve this goal he resorted to an organisations that shared his ideals of Elven superiority, the Avaronian Spectres. He made them into an official government organisation which helped him to stay in power for 53 years. During this time he relied heavily on them to police the state and find any dissidents.
No matter how one is born we all die the same
The high, the low, regardless of one's fame
As the dictator was about to strike
he would prove that he is alike
Fiery tendrils from his hands

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

The fire in his eyes expands

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

His mind set to slay

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

But then our hero stands in his way

Burn Dictator Buuuurn!

Fire engulfing
Burn Burn Burn Buuuurn
To ashes you shall retuuurn!

Covenant-Alliance War

In the year 1237 AE the largest war in Farlian history would begin thanks to Verakon Elervir. What only started as what seemed to be a border dispute quickly escalated into an enormous conflict involving various alliances. Verakon was obsessed with ancient Avaronian territories and when an old city was discovered within Eprus he believed it the region belonged to Mervidel.   The war that followed was one of the bloodiest wars in centuries, causing great amounts of casualties on both sides. The soldiers of the Magi-Covenant commited many war crimes at the orders of Verakon. When the war was over many of those warcriminals were hunted down, but some managed to escape. The henchmen of Verakon, the Avaronian Spectres were also disbanded.   What is most song about, however, is perhaps Verakon's death. Recently an opera was created, "The Dictator's War", by Elias Sevaski . He was present at the moment of death of Verakon and described it in his songs in great detail. When armies clashed near Old Asmeth, Verakon saw his army at the losing side and decided to take matters into his own hands. Ever confident in his own abilties he failed to anticipate his demise. Even though he could easily deal with Elias he did not forsee Elias' friend Andris throwing himself before him. The magic that Verakon was using to destroy Elias was powerful and when it detonated much closer due to Andris intervention it killed both him and Andris.   Verakon's death ended the war and the many years of conflict finally came to an end.

What a great introduction. It is pleasing to see an elf, and elves fill the roll of villain or monster for a change, and break the usual type-casting for them. Love all the connections to people, places and organizations.
