Razeena Naranja

Captain Razeena Naranja (a.k.a. Pirate Queen of the Broken Hands)

Little is known about the past of the woman who would be the Pirate Queen. According to the Lady herself, she was born in a Brazoso port city to refugees from the newly volcanic isles of Izquierda. Her father died while she was still young and her mother remarried a local man in order to save them from complete destitution. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a violent drunk who would thrash his wife and step-daughter whenever the mood took him. One day the girl was curled into a ball on the floor while her step father kicked mercilessly at her back when her hands closed on the handle of kitchen knife. Fifteen minutes later, still covered in blood, Razeena was hiding in a barrel labeled 'oranges' as it was loaded on to a merchant vessel headed for rougher waters. .   Somehow, she ended up on a pirate ship, steadily working her way up the ranks of the cut-throats. The details of period are largely lost to conjecture and legend, with her next verifiable location being a part of L'amiral Maison's fleet as they began their infamous raid up the Sternum Channel. She was seen at the sacking of Kleines, personally robbing the berger's mansion. It seems she seperated herself from the fleet at some point before their tragic end, sailing to Izquierda in time for her meeting with Carmena de Piscina.   Carmena de Piscina was a young woman of Los Companeros (Brazoso nobility), who had grown up enamored with tales of swashbuckling pirates. When faced with a loveless marriage and years of child rearing, she secretly spent some of her family fortune to hire a crew and build the perfect pirate ship. Christening the boat Blood Feud, she set sail for adventure.   And promptly bit off more than she could. While trying to waylay an Inzitamboan merchant vessel, it's escort came along side and crippled the Blood Feud. She managed to limp the vessel in to port, and while she was drowning her sorrows, met Zareena. The real pirate gave the wannabe a pep-talk, convincing her that she just needed seasoning. In fact, why didn't de Piscina give her control of the Blood Feud, while she served as first mate? Against the common logic about trusting pirates, de Piscina agreed. So ten year reign of Zareena Naranja, The Pirate Queen, began.   She started with bang, taking five slave ships out of Kakiatas. The "rescued" slaves were given a choice: join her crew or complete their originally journey. After expanding her crew and making a tidy profit, she headed north raiding the Inzintamboan Merchant Navy before retiring to Izquierda for the winter. The next two years saw her following similar patterns steadily growing her fleet. Until Puerto Otono.   Puerto Otono is a Brazoso colony on the island of Kaf. Though isolated as it was at the time, it's fertile soil and recently discovered silver mine gave it all the makings of a boom town. Tradeships were a common sight. Until The Blood Feud sailed into the harbor. Trailing behind it were The Delicate, Little Heinrich, The Gilded Hippopotamus, and The Northwind. Placing themselves just out of reach of the city's cannons, they held their blockade for almost two months. Finally, a ship managed to slip through and alert the Brazoso Navy, but before they could mount a response, the Pirate Queen's Fleet slipped away.   Nothing was heard of her for the next two years, as the navies of Elcadaver mounted a counter offensive. Nothing outside of the wastelands of Izquierda that is. While piracy was largely swept from the seas, Zareena and several other captain sat down and decided, first, Honor Among Thieves. The Jetsam Council forged a code of misconduct, so to speak. What ships could be taken what time of year, a system of settling intership disputes, and an annual lottery for deciding who could take cities hostages like she had with Puerto Otono. With that matter settled and once the heat had cooled off some, Zareena exploded back onto the scene.   Over the next six years, Zareena's cut-throat pseudo-nation brought the nations of the world to their knees. She repeated her stunt at Puerto Otono twice, once sailing directly into the Inzintamboan capital and making off three tons of gold. Her name was used to scare children into being good. No sailor would dare to utter her name out loud. Whispers of sorcerous power began to grow.   Nothing lasts forever though. A young upstart, so terrible that they had already started to call him The Dread, proved she was rigging the lottery. In order to save face she challenged the boy to a duel. His blade found her heart in the third round. She died at the top of her game, immortalized as the greatest pirate who ever sailed the seas of Elcadaver.
