Nas Domov

Demographics

The population is split into five tribes, roughly even in size, and is uniformly domovan, with the exception of one inkazimuloan sailor who washed up twenty or so years ago. He's quite mad. In both senses of the word.

Government

Each tribe is guided by a Headman, who also doubles as a priest. They have a council made up of the heads of the ten people who have contributed the most to the spiritual well-being of the people.   The island is too poor for a currency system to have developed, so taxes are levied sporadically and paid in kind. A week of labor, usually on a construction product the Headman has, often settles the villager for a year.

Defences

Isolation. The wider world knows of the islands existence, and they know of it's strange inhabitants. But the distance to reach the island, combined with it's small size, poor soil, and lack of anything worth taking, keeps it off the conquering list for most nations.

Industry & Trade

Subsistence farming is the name of the game. Little patches of yams, taro, and (if they are wealthy) sugar cane can be found out behind most huts. Chickens are the only domesticated animals running around, used exclusively for their bones, as the Domovan Religion seems to forbid meat.

Guilds and Factions

The five tribes: Kure, Banan, Brambor, Ryba, Pisek. Their competitions for prestige has stripped the island of most of it stone quarries.

Architecture

The most striking feature of the island to it's few visitors, is the statues. They're inescapable. The smallest ones stand feet tall and line the base of the cliff that over looks the southern beach. They all hold one pose, arms crossed, backs straight, thick legs shoulder width apart. But each is carved with unique patterns that mirror the ritualistic scarification the Domovans practice. The faces are all different too, as if their sculptor was trapping their subject in a personal hell. It's been noted that the heads are designed with holes, strategically placed so when the wind blows, they sound like they're moaning. For a while, the theory was these where the grave markers of Headmen through the ages.   The theory held, until someone ventured further inland. And found the larger statues.   The closer you get to the villages, the larger the statues get. And the more detail they display. One standing thirty feet tall, has the same ritual scarring, but each scar opened a window to scene from life on the island, usually showing the people building other statues. And always the face twisted in torturous, rapturous pain.
