Glarn Governing Residence

It might not look very important compared to many other similar buildings, but the Mayor's Office, or the Governing Residence, is still where the political power of Glarn gathers and work. It is perhaps the most important location of Marlun to control Marlun.

Glarn is the center of political power for the control over Marlun. The wooden and stone building stands on the east end of town. The governing residence is home to many, from servants to the mayor himself. One will also find visiting dignitaries housing themselves at this building when they inspect or visit Glarn for various reasons.

Political Home

The Mayor's Office is officially called Glarn Governing Residence ever since the first buildings for the purpose were built. This is mainly because for the longest of times it has been a governor or a general-governor that has been governing the town first of all and not the mayor. Having a simple office was not fit for the nobility and many rather use the finer word of "residence" as the name of their home during their stays in Glarn. The house eventually evolved to become the centre of political power beyond the location of where a governor would sit and eventually even turn into the mayor's semi-permanent residence during their stay in office. The council chambers, however, were never built into the building again after 1820 when The War for Marlun once again destroyed the building, creating the decision to separate the council chambers and the residence.

Apperance and layout

The residence is a large, rectangular three-story house. Most of the outside work is wood from Israk Forest in the west. With that in mind, there has been preparatory work to prevent fires with both magic and material work. Many windows line each floor which makes it quite different from other buildings in the same area, beyond it being quite tall at fourteen meters in height. Inside one finds the first floor with the main offices for political positions, a staff area with a kitchen and seating rooms. The second floor has a similar set-up with staff living quarters and rooms for visitors. The top, the third floor has visitor rooms and storage rooms. In the basement, there is a furnished prison with smaller guards' quarters, cold storage and running water from one of the underground river outlets.

Alterations

Over the many years and incarnations of the residence there have been several alterations to the building. The original buildings, for example, were much smaller according to written records. It was a two-story house with only four rooms in total and during those times there was no mayor's position, only a governor. Over time the buildings grew larger as war and disasters tore several of them down. The current building was constructed after a short conflict between The Council of Four Kings and Nekuram left the previous building in rubbles. With no expert help from Leonerd which had only recently been conquered by Orfordwhelm who still had strict control over the labour forces moving in and out of Leonerd, the town was left with little choice beyond constructing it themselves. This would lead to a wood design compared to the previous stone building but the foundation was made much stronger with the aid of the town's dwarven population. The reconstruction of the foundation lead to the town deciding to move the prison to the building's basement since the old castle was now in much-needed repair and was used as an armoury.
