Nijin-Laj Star System

Of unknown location, the Nijin-Laj star system is the second home of humanity.   Its position is impossible to triangulate as, after the inter-system jump, looking at the stars around the system there are none to be recognized, sitting in the middle of uncharted space and no known way back home if not through the Precursor Portal.   The system's star is hyperactive, with frequent solar storms of severe magnitude. Thanks to the aforementioned hyperactivity, life on Nijin-Konai had to evolve to survive a high radiation environment. Every 100 mya or so, the star's hyperactivity comes to a peak and a much stronger than usual solar storm is hurled towards the planet, killing off most of the planet's lifeform in mass extinction events; the time between these storms is called a "megafauna cycle".

History

Only recently "discovered" by Humanity, the Star System was inhabited by two different sophont species in the past and saw several more apparently passing by it.   Around 32 mya, the star system was home to a native sophont species, called by the Precursors L'lmanü, which eventually went extinct at the end of the last megafauna cycle.   L'lmanü went extinct in the Earth equivalent of the Iron age, leaving behind trinkets, fossil bones and, in some very rare occasions, even remains of buildings; most L'lmanü remains and artefacts are under Deshivohai control as the Precursors studied the natives thoroughly during their time in the system; leaving behind few, mostly underwater, discoveries for Humanity to make after colonization, easily making L'lmanü artefacts very precious on the market.   From an unknown age since a few hundred years ago, the system was used as an outpost for the Precursor empire; the mostly unknown sophont inhabited the planet and built several large structures along Nijin-Konai's surface and around the orbit of several other planets, harvesting resources and studying the native life.   A few centuries after they disappeared, Humanity was brought to the system by the machines they left behind, as a second home when Earth became uninhabitable after The Cure ravaged it.
