Newt's been trained to smile and nod and put on a pleasant face at all times. They're very good at that. They don't want to put on a show for their parents all the time, obviously, but they're resigned to it. This has made them good at sneaking around and lying. People tend to like them. Maybe by the end of the story, they'll learn that they don't have to be resigned to being what other people want them to be all the time. There are people who will accept them for who they actually are.
