Grimmore
The City of Art, with More Secrets Than You Think
Demographics
- A city for artists, so a lot of curators and gallery and museum managers
- But there are many students and scholars
- Along with the merchants who are always in and out of the city
- Miners
- Musicians
- Actors
- Densely populated
Government
The city is run by the elites, as many cities are nowadays. They invest in the arts and education heavily, because it's what the city is known for and what brings people in.
Defences
- There's a big stone wall around the city
- The bridges going into the city (Iron Bridge, Ashdurn Bridge, Old South Bridge) can be raised, this is also done for big ships coming in
- Huge gates can extend from the walls across the roads into town (Fallen Star Road, Merchant Alley, Scarlett Prince Highway)
- There's a highly trained police force called The Aylalim
Industry & Trade
- The major industry is the art. It's the art capital of the known world, and it does a booming business
- It's also a fairly central city, so it's a center of trade, with all kinds of merchants coming from all over to exchange goods
- To a lesser extent, scholars come to study at the universities and in the museums
- The city is also quite popular with street performers. They're regulated, mostly, and generally very good because of the amount of people
Infrastructure
Think of Victorian London, or at least the popular idea of it.
Lots of courtyards and alleyways, hidden corners of the city, even in the better off parts of town. There are a few covered markets (Crowle Market, Beetle Square, Heartstone), which were originally focused on art but have branched out to other businesses, many of which are catering to the same kind of crowd.
Districts
Grimacht Side
- The the art district
- Draws people from all over, both to see the art and in hope that some of their art could end up in one of the galleries or museums
- Even though it's still primarily art, other museums (like for history, for example the Chrysanthemum History Museum) have moved in too
- Some of the more famous museums include the Grimmore Museum of Art, the Angelwood Institute, and the Seddon Gallery
- Also home to Harrington University and Grimm School of Art
- The nightlife district
- Home to the nightclubs (e.g. Club Compass and Century Club) and restaurants (e.g. the Silver Tongue and Oddity) of the city
- Also where the younger, "cooler" crowd live
- The theaters (like The Limelight Theater and The Orbit Cinema) are clustered on the west end of Beechet Cross
- And finally, this is the shopping district. Some of the more famous stores are Turner's, Howlett Apothecary, Marsden's and Weston Watchmakers
- This is where the rich people live
- There are a few clubs, but anyone who's anyone goes to Bartley Gentlemen's Club or Keating Ladies' Club
- There are nicer shops here, like Samantha Hortence Dressmakers and Radcliffe Jewelers
- The Grimmore City Hall is here too, along with other government buildings like the Hall of Records
- And this is where everything else happens
- On the nicer side of Little Glendum are the markets mentioned earlier (Crowle Market, Heartstone, and Beetle Square)
- As you go farther into the district, there are residential neighborhoods like King Corners and the Whitlocks
- Then more shops that are...less desirable to have in Beechet Cross, such as Pearlriver Tannery, McNabb Exterminators, and Ron's Butcher Shop
- Finally, there is Kingshill Harbor on Rochmor River and the Sunflower Air Port
Guilds and Factions
History
Iestea was first scouted because rovers found water and at the time, the human race was just expanding at an incredible rate. They were looking at any planet slightly similar to Earth with water and that system flagged this planet. Once the planet was flagged, another more sophisticated rover was sent, sophisticated granted being a relative term. That rover found the Kosnine , which brought Iestea to the top of the list. Scouts were sent, then architects, engineers, miners, construction workers, plumbers, chemists, you name it, and Grimmore was built. Although originally, it was only a mining town with a big spaceport. Over the years it grew, and smaller towns popped up across the planet, although those remained mining towns. These merited the building of railways and harbors to transport the Kosnine. And because of the really good spaceport, Iestea and Grimmore became, while not the biggest trading center, certainly a stop on many trips and a place for many companies to hand of a load from one ship to another or even just refuel. A few generations ago, a mayor of Grimmore, who also works as a governor of Iestea, decided she wanted them to be more than that. She funded and built museums and universities and performing arts like orchestras and theaters and put programs into place to encourage students and artists and teachers and musicians and actors and other people who might feel at home in that kind of city. Somehow, after quite a while, it worked. From there Iestea and Grimmore have gained a reputation for the arts. —Iestea
Points of interest
- In Grimacht Side, the streets are narrow, but there is a courtyard in front of every museum, gallery, or university. Walking through that part of town is a unique experience that feels like you're always in the secret backstreets of the city.
- The Grimm School has an odd mismatch of architecture from the centuries it's been in operation. The original building is still there, albeit with restorations done over the years, but there are wings and whole other buildings built at different times in the school's history. The history of the city is written on the walls.
- The entire city is largely in shades of brown, black, or white, except for the markets. They are covered in bright colors, and are a visual breath of fresh air for the traveller not used to the monochromatic scheme of the city.
- The street performers are usually quite talented. It's a large city with a lot of foot traffic and courtyards. Very popular with musicians.
Tourism
The kinds of people who visit this city like art, whether it's a passing interest or their lifelong passion. A few people come for the markets or the history museums, but even they will end up at one art museum or another at some point. The artsy people also generally end up at a market eventually. There is the normal tourist season because that's when people get time off or see family, but there are tourists all year round.
Architecture
The architecture of the city is vaguely Victorian. Steampunk. The buildings are all stone because of the obvious lack of timber. The buildings are all close together because of the heavily populated city, and they're in space, so even the richer residents don't have lawns at all.
Geography
To the west, there's the Cheltara Ocean and Kingshill Harbor . To the south and southeast, there's Rochmor River . And to the northwest there's a station for the train.
