Old Kingdom of Alaj

The kingdom of Alaj was the smallest of the ancient kingdoms on the major continent, wedged between Nefrale and Linakra, along the Weeping River. It is best known for its technological innovations which were the first to effectively combine magical and non-magical technologies.

Technological Level

The kingdom of Alaj formed at the end of a revolution when a group of magic sympathizers tried to break away from Linakra. This had happened before, but this was the first time such an effort succeeded. This is because it had the backing of Runi Zrinag, the leader of the revolution, who also became the first king of the new kingdom.   The people of Alaj created their new kingdom along the Weeping River, in between Linakra and its enemy, Nefrale. This way, if one country attacked, it was likely the other would come to its defense, assuming they would be next. Nevertheless, the people of Alaj wanted to be able to put up a strong defense, in case this tactic didn't work.. Linakra, having decried magic, had been leaders in technological revolutions. They had developed gunpowder and has superior armor.. Nefrale, on the other hand, had masterful magics at its beck and call. Therefore, to maintain a strong defense against either neighbor, Alaj had to quickly develop and effectively maintain both magical and non-magical technologies.   Alaj was the first kingdom to effectively join magic and science, and first giving rise to the idea of a magical gift for mechanics. The people of Alaj used fire and metal magic to improve upon Linakra's gunpowder weapons and etched spells into their armor so that it might protect from from both physical and magical volleys. They also used this mesh of magic and science to develop other technology, like more efficient water mills and irrigation systems. They even developed a crude transportation system, a precursor of the one that exists today all over the world.
