Nefrale Council Member

Advisor to Nideon's Most Powerful King

The Council of Races in Nefrale is an advising body elected by the Nefrale legislature. It has 10 "permanent" seats held for members of specific groups: Elves, Sprites, Mermish, Wizards, and non-magical humans  (2 each), and 10 "temporary" seats which may rotate between other groups of people that the Nefrale government feels should be represented. During the majority of its existence, 2 of these seats have been held by Dragons, and 2 by members of the Huxoth tribe. Council members hold their seats for 3 years, after which the legislature can choose to re-instate them or replace them. They serve as some of Nefrale's primary ambassadors, and though their work is mainly advisory, they hold strong social sway over both the Nefralean King and the country's legislators.

Career

Qualifications

Council members must be at least 25 years old, they must be a member of the group they represent, and they must be nominated for the position. Members may be nominated by members of the Nefrale legislature, Nefrale's king, or leaders of the groups they represent (a Mermish leader may send in a nomination for a Mermish member, etc.) Finally, they are voted in by Nefrale's legislature. Though neither citizenship nor prior residence is required, those who are citizens of Nefrale, or have lived there for many years are usually given priority. At any given time one-half to two-thirds of the Council of Races are citizens.

Other Benefits

Despite having little power politically, membership on the council of races is a highly prestigious position. The council is older than the legislature, and members have always served as direct advisors to the king of Nefrale. Currently, they also serve as advisors to Nefrale's legislators, and more importantly, as ambassadors to other countries. Members of the council are often seen as Nefrale's first line of defense for lowering tensions between itself and other countries, and are expected to use their expert knowledge of the groups of people they represent to settle both intranational and international conflicts. Members have been lauded by the public as both heroes and villains, and due to their public image, they have the power to change approval ratings for other political figures.
