Starcross
Starcross is a large city situated on both a major crossroads and a leyline intersection. The city is structured around both, resulting in a layout resembling an eight-pointed star which gives Starcross its name.
Layout and Structure
Starcross is a metropolis which consists of an urban center surrounded by farmland. Two major roads quarter the city's layout, and those quarters are further bisected by a pair of crossing leylines. The roads and leylines intersect at the same point in the center of the city and radiate outward in eight directions, dividing the city blocks like slices of a pie. At the intersection lies Star Plaza, a large open area that serves as a hub of travel and communication, as well as the grounds for local festivals or other important events. The main roads are lined with businesses, especially those relevant to travelers: inns, eateries, supply stores, and so forth. Smaller streets branch off of the main roads, offering access to other businesses, municipal and religious buildings, and residential areas. The leylines are topped with low-fenced gardens and flanked by streets that are smaller than the main roads but bigger than interior streets. Along these roads are a number of businesses and other enterprises, generally magic-oriented establishments which can benefit from proximity to the leylines: potion crafters, arcane research laboratories, and the like. The city proper is surrounded by farms working the outlying lands to feed the local population. Right around where the city transitions to farmland, the areas by the main roads are filled with low-quality inns and overpriced travel supply stores, looking to capitalize on weary travelers' reluctance to spend time and energy shopping around at the end of a long journey.Power and Politics
Starcross is run by a city council of 10 people. This council is led by a mayor, though the gap in power between the mayor and the other council members is minimal; the primary role of the mayor is to connect with the public on behalf of the city. The city council includes a seat that is reserved for a local druid. Unlike the rest of the council, the holder of this seat is not elected by the populace. Instead, it is filled by a representative of a regional druidic order which supervises the relationship between settlements and the natural world to ensure mutual health and safety. This druidic order can send any member it wishes to fill the reserved seat in the city council. Other council members serve to represent the interests of various facets of the city: commercial, industrial, religious, agricultural, public works, and so forth. Each council member is selected by the population whose interests they are to represent, by whatever method that demographic favors.Remove these ads. Join the Worldbuilders Guild
