The Kraken's Keep

Food and drink above the water, a curious fellow below it.

Written by Phantom4700

If you're finding yourself in the seaside city of Dawnwater, one of the more popular locations to visit is The Kraken's Keep. A café, bar, and inn right on the waterfront with the city in front of it and the ocean behind it. It offers a selection of different food and drink, primarily seafood-based.

The Tavern's Owner

You won't find any regular man or being behind the counter serving food and drinks, but rather a couple of tentacles popping out from an opening in the tavern's floor that leads to the Establishment's underside. The kraken beneath is actually quite dexterous, being able to carry out most tasks with only his tentacles without disturbing the patrons or causing a mess.   Most refer to this mass of tentacles as Mr. Pennington, although no one knows precisely why he is called that, or who discovered the creature's name in the first place. If you were to ask any of the other staff that was hired at The Kraken's Keep, they would simply tell you it's because "that's his name." No one really knows how he was able to hire such loyal staff, either.

Appearance

The café itself is actually both quite spacious and quite stylish. Most of the establishment is situated next to a still-functional lighthouse, acting as a landmark for the city and the tavern.   The dining area is outside on a terrace on the water, where patrons can enjoy the sea air along with the setting/rising sun with their meals. Next to the dining area, there is a wood-built building that holds both an indoor kitchen for the staff to exit and enter the terrace on, and adjacent to the kitchen is a selection of rooms where guests can spend however many nights they pay for in luxury. The rooms either give a good view of the ocean or the city, depending on which side you room on.

Special Menu

While you can order things found in ordinary taverns if you want something more familiar, The Kraken's Keep has select food and drink that you can only find there.   Pennington's Brew
  • A drink that can be served both as an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic. The main ingredients usually consist of orange juice and pineapples, but the rest of the the ingredients/recipe are a trade secret. The drink has a sweet tang accompanied with a sea-salty flavor that results in a drink that most say embodies the Sea.
  • Mr. Pennington usually prepares and serves this drink himself, resulting in something of a show for the entire cafe.
  • Seaside Chowder
  • A variation of traditional clam chowder. While you can order regular clam chowder, the Seaside variation is rather spicy for those who want something as intense as the sea.
  • Salted Baconfish
  • A special dish that cooks cod that's wrapped in bacon, with diced potatoes on the side.

    History

The Kraken's Keep, up until around 10 years ago, was simply a lighthouse next to an abandoned inn that was kept by a kindly man named Norrington Xavier. Mysteriously, He would disappear every so often for a day or two before returning and tending to the lighthouse. However, during one of these "outings," he never returned. A few days after he left, people started hearing about how something "of the ocean" has taken up residence besides the lighthouse and inn. After enough given time, people heard that the creature was actually serving food and drink that was pretty good, and slowly but surely the old abandoned inn was eventually known as one of the best cafe's in town, The Kraken's Keep.

    Possible Quest/Plot Hooks

      The Missing Keeper
  • For some unexplained reason, Mr. Pennington has gone missing and the rest of the staff are nervous about it. No one knows where he's gone, and no one knows why. Perhaps it was a rival tavern keeper, a hunter of rare beasts, or even another creature of the deep, or something unrelated altogether.

Great article! I would love to meet Mr. Pennington he sounds like a swell guy that would know all of the current affairs xD Look out though you have your building type listed twice in your sidebar!   Brilliant article with a very creative idea that can take you to a bunch of other places with your world building! Also I'm going to be kraken sea puns for the rest of the night so thank you for that :D

What a great seaside tavern! is it a deepwater port, or did the kraken carve out a cave to allow it to reside under the inn? (kraken carrying with it a certain assumed size)   The intrigue sprinkled through out the article is great. How DID he hire his staff and spread the word that the Inn/tavern was open?   Such a good job.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.
