Investment of The Gods

History

A card and board roleplaying game based on the Fengshan Yanyi, a novel about celestial intrigue. The setting of the game takes place immediately after the events of the novel.

Execution

Players all take on the role of a god of their own creation by selecting their domain and ability, as well as a token to represent them in an offline match.
Each god has a faith level which must be above a certain level in order to remain in the game, cast miracles, or avoid calamities.
Dice is used to determine the number of physical steps a god can take on the board, and a base chance of succeeding at events.
In-game faith can be restored by normal walking among citizens or succeeding at miracles by base chance.
The usual winning condition is when the player's god is officially part of the Celestial Bureau, as indicated by an event card with the Jade Emperor on it. If several players tie for this celestial promotion event, the one with the most skill will take the prize.

Components and tools

A board printed with the situations the newly promoted god would find themselves in. Examples include:
  • Worshippers losing faith.
  • Rival god wanting to duel.
  • Opportunity to get promoted in the bureau.
  • A monument built in the player's name.
A pair of six-sided dice is used to determine success base chances.

Participants

Can be played by at least two people, up to a maximum of eight per game.
There is an additional administrator role that can be taken by one of the players, under the caveat that they can't participate in the game proper. Their role is to keep track of the others' divine points and randomly roll for chances of events to occur.
Short casual games of Investment don't require an administrator, along with those run by less than four people.

Observance

Can be played at any time, as long as all members of the game party are present. With the advent of the internet, some games are played online. Online matches require an administrator due to the sheer distance in time and space covered.
