Session 1 - Beginnings
General Summary
Our story begins with a small rabbit hopping out into a clearing. Suddenly, an arrow whizzes by and pierces a far tree. The rabbit, startled, hops away into the brush. Out from the brush comes a frustrated Sasha Densharr. She yanks the arrow out of the tree. Dead set on not going back empty-handed, she cocks back the same arrow, and manages to impale the rabbit cleanly.
She takes the rabbit and heads back out onto the dirt road nearby. Parked along it is the fine carriage owned by Eleanor. She’s busying herself inside while her horse, Peanut, idles about. Sasha calls out to Eleanor, and she emerges from the carriage, hitting her head on the way out. The two talk, and Sasha gets to skinning the rabbit. Eleanor heads back inside and starts a small fire. The two chat as Eleanor cooks the rabbit and Sasha sets the table. After some trouble on Sasha’s part, everything is prepared and the two dig in.
Eleanor shows a desire to learn more about Sasha, but before she can press further, she spots a man groaning on the path nearby. She hurries out, with Sasha just behind, ready to assist the man. When Eleanor and Sasha crouch down, it’s revealed that this was an ambush. Two men emerge from behind, and the fallen one, revealed to be uninjured, holds Eleanor at knifepoint. Sasha is forced to let them take her gear, and they prepare to board the carriage and take off.
Just as the third man lets go of Eleanor and turns around, Sasha lunges at him and claws his throat out right in front of the other two men. The sight scares one of the two so much that he runs off. The final one attacks Sasha, and the two struggle for a bit. Eleanor helps when she can, and eventually Sasha gets the upper hand. She allows the man to leave, but then has second thoughts. She hucks a knife and pierces the man’s skull. Eleanor approaches Sasha and shows her that she’s found a piece of cloth with a strange symbol on it.
A small grouping of tents encircle a makeshift lookout tower. Inside one of these tents is Hamilton Caldwell, who lies in a blanket of papers strewn everywhere. It isn’t until Samantha Wilcott, one of his associates, pours water on his face that he finally rises. When Hamilton leaves his tent, he is greeted by Ryka, the party’s guide and protector. Soon after, Marcus Hawthorne passes Hamilton a mug of coffee and tells him that the leader of the party, Walter Stanton, would like to speak with him.
Inside Stanton’s tent, Hamilton gets chewed out. Apparently, Hamilton snuck out during the night prior and took a look into the ruins without telling anyone. Stanton is furious at this, and warns Hamilton not to do it again. He then tells Hamilton to gather everyone to prepare to enter the ruins.
Hamilton gathers Marcus and Ryka, and heads over to see Samantha lecturing Alice Roldwin. Samantha explains to Hamilton that Alice snuck out the previous night, too, but only to watch Hamilton work, because she admires him so much. Samantha believes Alice shouldn’t be allowed on the expedition, but Hamilton convinces her to allow Alice along.
Stanton announces that they will all be going 10 feet further in the ruins. Hamilton chimes in, arguing that 10 feet is very little. He convinces Stanton to allow him to go a little further himself, if he so chooses. The party enters the ruins, along with their two Servos, One and Two, and travel along it, when they spot a doorway. Hamilton enters and sees a small, circular indentation on the wall. When he places his hand on it, the structure appears to reactivate, as runes light up all over the walls and a loud humming is heard.
Stanton attempts to tackle Hamilton, but he defends himself. Stanton, fed up with Hamilton, decides to run out of the ruins and encourages the rest of the party to do the same. Everyone escapes apart from Alice, Marcus, One, and Two. Alice and Marcus enter the room with Hamilton and await what will happen. Hamilton discovers his medallion is causing the reaction, and decides to place it in the indentation. The structure appears to accept it, but after a moment, it shoots out at Hamilton. The impact knocks him unconscious.
Out on the massive dock of Mainfair, the shops are as lively as ever. Wandering between the shops, with 50 gold pieces in hand, is Skinny. He thinks back to his task assigned to him by his master, Captain Augustus Grimm, to purchase a captain’s hat from the HansPuckett down the way, as it’s the last one in stock.
Skinny is stopped by a large man who commands him to hand over the 50 gold. Skinny is able to refuse the command, but before he can be attacked, someone steps between the two. The man defuses the situation by giving 100 gold pieces to the large man and sending him off. He turns to Skinny and introduces himself as Roger Hart. He hands Skinny a metal business card, and encourages him to be careful.
Skinny continues on his way and finally arrives at the HansPuckett, which has a VendTech shop right beside it. Skinny enters the HansPuckett and speaks with the woman at the counter. Skinny forgets what kind of hat Captain Grimm asked for, but is able to decide on a Captain’s Hat. However, it turns out the hat has already been purchased. Instead, Skinny purchases a black cowboy hat. The woman attempts to take advantage of Skinny’s stupidity, but he successfully points out the “error”, and is treated fairly in the end.
Upon leaving the shop, Skinny is stopped, once again, by Roger Hart. Roger offers to get Skinny a nice Captain’s Hat in exchange for a few things: the remainder of Skinny’s gold, the cowboy hat, and a favor. Skinny initially accepts and hands over the gold and hat, but ultimately decides against it. However, he does forget to take back his 9 gold pieces.
After heading back to The Reapers' ship, Skinny shows the hat to Captain Grimm. The Captain is visibly upset with the outcome, but when Skinny brings up the fact that the hat goes with his outfit, Captain Grimm accepts the hat. He then orders the crew to prep Skinny to be sent into the water, and mentions that Skinny needs to be ready for later today, as the Captain has an appointment…
