High Hiraethien

Language of Royals

The old language of Hiraeth, High Hiraethien was bastardized into Low Hiraethien after Hiraeth became involved in trade, as the original language had too many sounds and pitches that most species could not produce.

History-

High Hiraethien was the original language of Hiraeth, back when the population was almost exclusively Mothrai. It was only when other species started moving there, and merchants visited to buy and sell resources, that the language barrier became a problem. Hiraeth saw a threat to its future economy and alliances- if communication could not be achieved, then they were at a severe disadvantage. And so Low Hiraethien was developed, and later standardized.   It bore some similarity to High Hiraethien, but removed all the trills and chirps that other species could not mimic, replacing them with sounds that were more familiar. Children started learning the new Low Hiraethien as they grew, and for a time only royals learnt High Hiraethien- they were all descended from Mothrai, so they could pronounce the strange sounds. It became a sign of status to know the language, though it wasn’t useful for much else. It was too similar to Low Hiraethien to be of use as a secret language.   After the nobles were executed and the monarchy abolished, High Hiraethien stopped being taught at all. It is almost a dead language by now, and few efforts are being made to conserve it, as it seems that most Hiraethiens would rather forget the old monarchy- and that includes anything tied to it. Some archivists are attempting to record the language before it dies out for good, but the irregularity and uniqueness of the language is difficult to record in writing, and they do not have the funding to acquire technology used to create audio recordings.

Speakers-

Speakers of High Hiraethien are few and far between today, as the language is not taught standardly and serves no significant advantage for trade or communication. Teachers from the days of the Pharic royals exist, as the language was once taught to nobles as a status symbol, but they were rare even back then, and they have only gotten rarer, and after the monarchy was abolished they don't willingly speak of their time there.   High Hiraethien is used presently by some secret organizations, but this, again, is rare, and depends on the organization being led exclusively by species that can mimic the more inhuman noises of High Hiraethien.

Sound-

High Hiraethien is often compared to birdsong, with high trills, chirps, and clicks in many words. It is considered a beautiful, strange language, but its association to the old Hiraethien monarchy doesn't do it any favors in popularity.    The words themselves are quite long and descriptive, with many vowels, and are difficult to learn and memorize. Many words for agriculture and plants trace their roots to High Hiraethien.
