Raine Dowd

Raine Elizabeth Dowd

"What, is my Icarus not as pretty as yours? Tough titties I guess."
— -Raine Dowd, House of Magi

Physical Description

Special abilities

As with every other Magi, Raine posesses the ability to manipulate most natural forces. Unlike most Magi however, her speciality is working in fast-paced, high-tension situations. If anyone needs to think on their feet Raine is usually it, able to cast fire with precision or link her Éla with another's to strengthen their power. This places them, potentially, as one of the more powerful of the young Magi, especially in terms of control and precision.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Raine was born in the town of Mareen , and grew up on the outskirts of Hightown to a family of wealthy merchants. As a child, her parents were deeply neglectful with her father often away on business and her mother only caring to pay attention to her when it was to make her useful -- or to shout at her.   As she grew older the abuse became worse, often leaving her with heavy bruising and lacerations she hid from other people. Family members she tried to turn to for help accused her of exaggerating or lying for attention. After a time she learned not to speak of it, and took her pain out on other things instead -- minor cases of arson, aggravated assault and antisocial behaviour are just a few of the crimes on her record before the age of sixteen.   When she turned fourteen, her mother's clothes caught fire just seconds before she was rearing to strike her daughter. Raine didn't know how to feel, but her father certainly did, and he was embarassed to be seen with a Magi daughter. Fortunately, she was able to mask her status and the family spoke no more of it - though they were a little more careful with her from then on.   It didn't last. The first time she showed signs of instability in public, she was marked as a Magi and diagnosed with Icarus Syndrome. As a result she was sent to the Mareen Institute for Troubled Magi, where she would be forced to remain "for her own good".

Events of House of Magi

When the Shelter Magi broke into the Institute to retrieve their friend, Raine's quick thinking (and general lack of care for the outcome either way) was instrumental to helping them succeed. She returned with the rescued Magi to the Shelter and spent much of her time there on her own, reading, sketching, listening to music or otherwise occupying herself -- content to stay away from the others as she knew her personality tended to be abrasive to others.   These days, living in the Village of Shelter, Raine had taken it upon herself to oversee much of the village's crop harvesting and minor repairs, keeping herself busy and useful.

Education

Raine initially attended the Marenia General School until she was expelled for disruptive behaviour and tutored at home -- something she hated. Most of her true learning came from self-teaching, but she is happy to get by on her knowledge of people and their inner workings, even if she doesn't completely know the reasoning behind those workings.

Morality & Philosophy

Raine's worldview is a highly logical, detached one, partially born out of necessity growing up. Her friends are people who are useful to her without annoying her too much, and the list of people she dislikes is long. Still, she understands that not everyone thinks that way, and does her best not to hurt anyone these days -- though some people push her buttons just right.
